| phi | posted 30-Apr-2000 6:17pm I don't think I could start with a title and wind up with an autobiography. It'd have to work the other way around. Around the time I moved from Boston to Maryland (I have since moved back) I wrote a somewhat autobiographical essay, which is titled Crossing the Mason-Dixon Line. But I don't imagine I'd use that title for a fuller work. |
| Lauren | posted 30-Apr-2000 7:16pm My previous comment was "Dazed and Confused" I believe it still fits. But I might also use "The Rollercoaster called LIFE" |
| phi | posted 30-Apr-2000 8:04pm Hm. If instead of an autobiography I simply collected all of my existing semiautobiographical stories and essays, the resulting collection might be called Bridges and Ferries. |
| sequel | posted 30-Apr-2000 9:30pm Um, phi, both Massachusetts and Maryland are above the Mason-Dixon line. Maryland is also called "the free state". |

| phi | posted 30-Apr-2000 10:24pm sequel: sorry, but although Maryland was not part of the confederacy it was a slave state, and the line that Mason and Dixon actually surveyed was the border of Maryland with Pennsylvania and part of Delaware. |
| anonymous | posted 30-Apr-2000 10:37pm From that web page: "The fact that the original Mason-Dixon Line ran along the Maryland/Pennsylvania border might led one to think that Maryland was a Confederate state during the American Civil War. It wasn't - Maryland fought on the side of the Union. However, Maryland was a slave state and many Marylanders served in the Confederate army." |

| sequel | posted 1-May-2000 1:12pm phi: Sorry, Maryland was not a slave state. Some people kept slaves, some did not. Some people fought for the Confederacy, some for the Union. *Legally*, however, slaves were free once they reached Maryland. Thus, "the free state". The term Mason-Dixon is normally used to denote north-south or slave state-nonslave state. I'm sure I could dig up the technical roots of a lot of commonly used terms that wouldn't quite match the colloquial definition. Basically, if you wrote an autobiography with that title, in reference to moving to MD, people would wonder what you were talking about. |

| phi | posted 1-May-2000 4:13pm sequel: did you bother to read the page I posted a link to (or the excerpt that anonymous #3 so graciously provided)? Shall I post links to the State of Maryland's slave ownership records? For that matter, did you bother to read my comment, to the effect that I wouldn't use that title for an autobiography? It makes a fine title for the essay, which is much more about leaving Boston than it is about coming to Maryland. |
| sequel | posted 2-May-2000 4:09am phi: Did you bother reading what I wrote? Yes, some people owned slaves. Some did not. Some served in the Union army, some in the Confederate. That does not change the fact that Maryland was "the free state", not a slave state. Shall I post links of my own? Better yet, shall I refer you to the tourism council of the town in which I have lived for many years? |
| drdt | posted 2-May-2000 9:38am "The Path Less Traveled By". |
| drdt | posted 2-May-2000 9:43am sequel: Phi's link contains a fascinating and detailed reference claiming that Maryland was a slave state even though it was forced to remain in the Union during the war and its current residents refer to it as 'the free state'. It would be polite to provide a counter-reference if you are disagreeing with this assertion. I for one would like to hear the other side of the story. |
| magbast | posted 2-May-2000 9:46am drdt- since when has 'polite' had anything to do with an disagreement at SC lol |

| phi | posted 2-May-2000 11:51am sequel: are you implying that every citizen in Georgia owned slaves? Are you defining 'slave state' as anything other than a state in which slavery was legal? It was most certainly legal in Maryland until 1864. And the Dred Scott decision sort of puts the kibosh on your "free state" theory even if slavery weren't legal in MD. |
| phi | posted 2-May-2000 12:00pm Oh, by the way, the State of Maryland considers the origin of the nickname "The Free State" to date from a 1923 newspaper editorial concerning the legality of alcohol. |
