I generally use local bookshops in my home town, as well as a second-hand bookstall on the Saturday market. But I tend to read reviews and stuff at Amazon and other online shops, and I'll use them for something that's going to be significantly cheaper there than buying it in the flesh, so to speak. |

- By this standard, I rarely go grocery shopping, visit friends, or at times, rarely leave the house in fact. Though I go to a bookstore about as frequently as I watch a movie in any form. (groceries, retro-things, & other occult things take precedence) - Only local themed or used independent bookshops, who's names I don't care to look up. When I was a teen, I practically lived in the occult section of a used bookstore in santa cruz called logos. It was such a value; for every stack of books or records I brought in my wife and I would get half as many fresh replacements. |

If frequently means "once a week" in this survey, what does rarely entail? I couldn't pick any of the choices due to the wording. |

kirst & they - There aren't too many people who visit a bookstore every day (I love reading, and I have thousands of books, but I don't visit one every day), and visiting a bookstore once a week or more is definitely frequently by most people's definition of the word. I think you're being just a bit too pedantic here. |
they | | posted 22-Apr-2000 10:41am |
I think because once per week is really often to visit a bookstore.. but rarely isn't enough.. |
Kristal_Rose | | posted 22-Apr-2000 10:45am |
Because most people on this planet would have to ignore the explanation to make use of the options. It should have read "which are your favorites" and included a separate section or another survey related to frequency. Thanks for the inspiration to vote. There also may be people here who spend a lot of time at the library instead. How would you rate a survey "Which auto-parts [ or christmas decoration] stores do you visit frequently"? |
nihon | | posted 22-Apr-2000 10:49am |
Kristal_Rose - I would say your activities are unusual, then. Most people visit a grocery store at least once a week (usually more often). It seems to me like you're a bit reclusive, based on the details you provided.
kirst & they - I would say rarely is every couple weeks or so. |
nihon | | posted 22-Apr-2000 10:51am |
they - "Frequently" is the same thing as "really often", isn't it? |

We praise thee, oh god of book purchases. Forgive us, we are not worthy. |
they | | posted 22-Apr-2000 10:55am |
All I'm saying is you should have an option for OTHER... I don't visit a bookstore (online or otherwise) once a week, but I wouldn't consider my visits to be rare either. |
nihon | | posted 22-Apr-2000 11:02am |
Kristal_Rose - If you felt this strongly about the survey not being good, then why didn't you mark it as "needs work"? You voted "N/A", and I never had the chance to make more changes before others qualified it. I don't think you have any place complaining about this after the fact when you didn't do your part by marking it "needs work". I can't be online 24-hours-a-day checking every couple minutes for new "N/A" votes that should have been "needs work" votes. |
nihon | | posted 22-Apr-2000 11:07am |
they - I agree that an "Other" option would have been good, but again, no one brought that up in the qualification phase. I'm not omnipotent, and I do make mistakes. Kristal_Rose - We appreciate your sarcasm. May you be blessed with more books than you know what to do with. |

I go to amazon.com a fair amount, and I go to a local used book store, McIntyre-Moore, which totally rocks. They have a really good religion section, and sometimes have some excellent ancient near eastern history and philology material. |

I also get a lot of book catalogs from scholarly publishers and distributors. |

Wordsworth in Cambridge and Borders up in New Hampshire. Once in a while I go to Quantum Books in Cambridge or the science fiction bookstore (Pandemonium?) in Harvard Square. I've been trying recently to mail order books from Wordsworth instead of Amazon. |

Nihon: because that attitude on qualifying surveys came as quite a surprise to me. My first day qualifying surveys I was chastised for marking a survey "needs work". I gave it immediate thought and realised they were right. I am free to express my opinion, but who am I to interfere with their freewill, especially when my opinions may be contrary to the local popular opinion. Also I might not get around to changing my vote for days on someones attempted survey, although I check responses frequently on one's I write as personal survey's. In the future I will respect your wishes, make an exception to my policy, and vote "need's work" on any of your survey's in which I feel that would improve things. Ah wait, I can't do that since they're anonymous during the qualification stage. |

Kristal_Rose - If you honestly believe a survey could be better or improved somehow, then mark it "needs work". I've written enough surveys now that you should be able to tell my "style". I'm glad to entertain your ideas, but they need to be marked "needs work" if I'm to consider incorporating them into the survey. I live in Japan, so my waking hours do not necessarily coincide with yours. |
Kristal_Rose | | posted 22-Apr-2000 12:28pm |
If you live in Japan, alas, every other day they do. I don't entirely like the survey qualifier. Though the surveys are more accurate and encompassing, they lack personal expression. Anything creative quirky and metaphoric is likely to get zorched, rather being left to those who would enjoy it's character. If we all operated by your policy, little would pass here, those that did would be all greatest common denominator in details, but least common denominator in gestalt/subject/attitude, much like the plastic american presidents since the advent of quick nosy media who couldn't possibly achieve novel solutions as were done prior to radio. Besides, a handful of people had a chance to read my comment, yet still voted "reasonable". I'd say that indicates my opinion was not the popular opinion. When those people vote, perhaps your ranking will improve. I haven't looked at a rating in months, and don't use survey selectors that use them as a criteria. In my experience, my favorite survey authors got low rankings. |

Technically I cannot answer. No box for me to click because of your definition of frequent. Thanks a lot. There is no option for my "not never"..."not rare" but less than your "weekly/frequent" visits to my local bookstores. |
| mandy | | posted 22-Apr-2000 2:36pm |
nihon...I brought it up in qualification but didn't vote "needs work" and then the next person cast the reasonable vote that qualified it. My bad. Next time I'll make sure that if I want an option to click for my situation, I tag my comment with a needs work vote. |

I wish I could still visit Waterstone's in Boston; it was a good, big bookstore. I visit Brookline Booksmith and Harvard Book Store, which are both small and good. |

I have a few bookstores I like, the one I go to most often is Chapters though. They have a Starbucks there so I usually go quite often with some friends of mine and we have a coffee and read and do work when we have some, we usually end up talking and not getting too much work done. I really enjoy it though :) Another bookstore I like is right in front of a University here. They have a lot of great second hand books. Since this morning I've had this little voice in my head telling me to go to chapters and by the book I wanted yesterday ugggg.... and I'm really near to giving in too! I'm trying to fight the urge but its getting the best of me... What can I say, I'm weak when it comes to books... |

An Irvine Welsh book, Ecstasy... but I ended up getting two more as well. They were one sale for pretty much nothing! So I got them too... An Illustrated Atlas of Native American History and Clan of the Cave Bear |

Frey: I took a semester in meso-american art history & grew on it. I got ocasional status report cave bear, sounded good. Not read welsh. Nihon: I still doubt that 1/2 of the people here literally visit amazon weekly. |
nihon | | posted 23-Apr-2000 7:24am |
they - No problem. I was just confused as to why it was being rated so low. I was also confused by people who offered suggestions for improvement but didn't mark it "needs work". Maybe I'll make this survey again in six months.
Kristal_Rose - Quite possible. I visit Amazon.com about once a week, but then I love to hunt around and search for book info (as well as the other stuff they have there). |

I mostly visit WHSmiths and Waterstones. Waterstones is more my idea of a bookworm's bookshop. Rows and rows of shelves, nice, quiet, atmosphere. There's a really good Waterstones in Bradford. Its in an old converted church. The architecture is wonderful, and a stairway leads up to a balcony overlooking the whole place where you can sit and drink coffee. The last time I was there, I finally got round to buying my own copy of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and read the first few chapters over a nice cappucino. Yummy. |
