| Enheduanna | posted 6-Apr-2000 10:15pm If Religion or Bible were options, I'd be all over that. Otherwise, I guess General Knowledge. If it were Ancient History only, I'd pick that. |
| romkey | posted 6-Apr-2000 11:40pm I wouldn't bother to do it for money. I might try "Science" for fun. |

| pcpr | posted 7-Apr-2000 4:49am I'd be interested in seeing them pay Romkey 20 times his annual salary! |
| cookiekid | posted 7-Apr-2000 6:36am Music definitely. Hard question though, how hard would the questions be? I wish it were real. I'd never manage the pressure though! |
| Wicksy | posted 7-Apr-2000 6:43am I would pick music, then sport |
| SueBee | posted 7-Apr-2000 12:18pm Without any time to study I'd pick music, but if I had time beforehand to brush up, I'd pick geography. |
| Mozluvr | posted 7-Apr-2000 12:37pm I'd probably turn them down completely, actually... Why needs to be so spoiled? |
| mary | posted 7-Apr-2000 12:54pm Oh geeze, maybe Geography, but only from my home town and Phoenix, AZ. I would say music, but only from about 4 different musicians. When it comes down to it, I think I wouldn't get any of them right. OH! I would probably get all of them right if it was about astrology. |
| Gamera | posted 7-Apr-2000 1:57pm What is "General Knowledge" ?!?! |
| Gamera | posted 7-Apr-2000 2:00pm I could make 20 times my annual salary by working for a month in a coffee shop, and meet interesting people in the process. |
| they | posted 7-Apr-2000 2:09pm General Knowledge. |
| romkey | posted 7-Apr-2000 2:13pm topper - it's bits battered and deep fried and served with a brown sauce. |
| ILJ | posted 7-Apr-2000 3:21pm topper: Which of the two words is confusing you?? |
| Analog | posted 7-Apr-2000 4:23pm SCIENCE! |
| Gamera | posted 7-Apr-2000 5:09pm ILJ- I guess it would be the term "general." I mean what is generally known by a rice farmer in Japan is different then what is generally known by a corn farmer in Iowa, and very different from what is generally known by a graphic designer born and raised in New York City. I could imagine a "general knowledge" question asking "From what direction does the sun rise?" If you live in Barrow, Alaska, the answer to the latter question would be "south south east," and if you live in New England you might reasonably ask "In the winter or the summer?" It seems to me that it would be really hard to find any questions that could reasonably be called "general." |
| Frostbrand | posted 7-Apr-2000 6:55pm Film, Music, or General Knwoledge. Choosing which one would be diffcult. |
| pcpr | posted 8-Apr-2000 3:31am topper -- would that be an African swallow or an European swallow? [Aaaaaaaaaah!] |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 8-Apr-2000 7:00am I chose 'science'. 'General' would have been second. Metaphysics & art would have been my choices if listed. |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 8-Apr-2000 7:07am Wicksy: What is grüngestalt? Oh, I love the karma I'll get for this one. Johnny buckedee, rum ding doo, ni ni ni, yowoooo. remember brasil? ereiam.com, but give me a couple weeks first. |
| bluebird1974 | posted 8-Apr-2000 11:39am Science for sure. |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 8-Apr-2000 1:18pm Hey, this was the place to mention my site since I'll probably multiply my earnings by 20 by answering questions as a tarot psychic. |
| Vennwill | posted 9-Apr-2000 3:28pm general knowledge |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 9-Apr-2000 7:20pm Mary: I didn't know you were an astrologer. I've forgotten half of it, but there was a time when I was writing a natal chart program in AutoCAD, & carried a calculator to translate between the gregorian & mayan calendar. Hone, Leo, HPB, Goodman, the Dawn folk; Chinese, Hindu; planetary progressions, lilith moon; who & what do you study? |
| ILJ | posted 9-Apr-2000 10:39pm topper: Excellent points, all. I think the term "general knowledge" probably needs to be taken with the same grain of [living between the 135 West and 30 East longitude line and the 60 North and 25 North latitude line]-centricity that so many of us have become all-too-accustomed to applying to every aspect of our lives. |
| Maggie | posted 9-Apr-2000 10:45pm General Knowledge |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 9-Apr-2000 10:50pm Well I'm at 22 North, & I have to say that santa cruz & berkeley are a lot more communist than la,ca,us. And Alaskans are anything but communist, well I see your point. The US media isn't big on letting it's people know that there are large black business metropolis's in places like nigeria. |
| mary | posted 10-Apr-2000 12:15pm Kristal_Rose: I am not an astrologer, I just get into it. |
| joachim | posted 10-Apr-2000 2:13pm I checked science, but next would be history. If it were sports, I'd be broke! |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 10-Apr-2000 4:48pm Mary: It's starting to jive with science finally. There's a scientific website that gives the mornings weather report in terms of proton & neutron fluxes within the solar system. I appreciate your 'we belong to the earth' worldview. It's one of the sweetest. |
| micah | posted 13-Apr-2000 5:52am Most definitely science. Did you know that 1 horsepower is equal to 33,000 footpounds per minute? |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 13-Apr-2000 8:32am Yes I did. That would be a measurement of Brake Horse Power. and 'the Graduate' spins at 33 RPM as I speak, says KRPM All right micah, There's a lake at the bottom of the hill, your house is at a 50 foot higher elevation. You choose the hose and flow rating of your pump installed at the house. What is the minimum psi rating required to get water out of the lake? or this one: choose a smooth surface on the planet, say the ocean on a glassy morning. Shoot a rifle perpendicular to the ground as you drop a bullet; which bullet will hit the surface first? |
| magbast | posted 13-Apr-2000 8:54am couldn't you install the pump at water's edge? |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 13-Apr-2000 9:02am But what if you didn't? Wait for micah. |
| magbast | posted 13-Apr-2000 9:28am as to your second...is it in a vacuum? what caliber is the bullet and what grain...does it matter?...i'm not much on physics.. |
| micah | posted 13-Apr-2000 11:54am As for the bullet, it depends on if you shoot the bullet straight up, or straight down. As for the waterflow, for a normal household, I would suggest 2 1/2 inch cpvc, and maybe a 10 or 12 hp wisperflow. That's assuming that when you say that my house is 50 feet higher, you mean higher than the lake, rather than the top of the hill, cause if that's what you mean, you have a much bigger problem than getting water to your house. I could really be a smartass and say that all you would need is a fish pump. You said "get water out of the lake, and no designation as to where the water needed to go, or for what purpose. |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 13-Apr-2000 12:18pm micah: I'm sorry I meant parallell, not perpendicular. As to the second problem, sorry that ain't gonna cut it. [though I loved interpreting it] magbast: right answer, wrong problem. re: second problem. No, it doesn't matter if it's in a vaccuum, nor the weight. But for scientific purity, lets presume the planet is within a vacuum and both bullets weigh the same. |
| micah | posted 13-Apr-2000 9:44pm It does matter if the planet has an atmosphere or not. Air resistance has a major factor in an object's speed (terminal velocity of a free falling human being is about 200 miles per hour.) Back to the question, If the weights of the 2 bullets are identical you are then, and only then, correct about the air statement.....whatever, anyway, they'll both hit the ground at the same time. |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 14-Apr-2000 2:18am Micah: the earth is curved. Try the pump now. |
| micah | posted 14-Apr-2000 5:25am That's one hell of a gun you've got! Just above the Earth's surface, that bullet would have to go tens of thousands of miles per hour to make a decent change in falling speed. |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 14-Apr-2000 5:43am I hope you don't mean the change in gravitational accelleration due to the increased distance from the earth, merely the increased difference itself. The pump one is easier, something any hydraulic engineer needs to know. Your pump setup might work if you were to find a nice valley with a laxe and and a hill 15,ooo feet below sea level. |
| micah | posted 14-Apr-2000 2:54pm I skipped the hydraulic engineering classes and took music theory. damn. But as soon as I find the very same book you have in your hands right now, I'll be able to answer your questions with a little more accuracy. |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 14-Apr-2000 5:20pm Joke: A gymnast looking for work applies answers a want-ad at the zoo. "bo-bo, the ape, our main attraction, just died, so we want you to wear this costume". He soon gets into his job, throwing banana peels at the visitors. His gymnastics get to ambitious as he leaps the wall and land's in the lions cage. "Help, Help", he screams, and the lion whispers "Shut up, you want us to all lose our jobs?" Water must be pumped uphill. Even absolute vacuum could only pull it to a height of 30 feet at sea level. |
| micah | posted 17-Apr-2000 5:54am Wisperflows are self-priming pumps. It doesn't matter which side of the pump the load is at. Am I missing something? |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 17-Apr-2000 11:12am It does matter at a certain point. With a strog enough pump at the 'bottom' of the plumbing you could push water to the moon; But the most 'suction' the strongest of pumps could create is absolute vacuum. Absolute vacuum can only lift water 30 feet. (50 feet, if as I said, you live in a valley 3 miles below sea level where there is a bit more atmospheric pressure to push the water upward) This why submersible flood pumps are made instead of just running a hose to a pump above. I remember my first direct experience with comparative pressures: I was in a swimming pool and had the clever idea of using a garden hose as a snorkel. I swam to the bottom of the pool with my thumb over the hose. The moment I opened the barrier between my lungs and the hose, water pressure flattened me, and I had to flounder for the surface without a drop of air. I recently watched a movie in which they denied these physics, 'the Shadow'. The hero was locked in a water tank that was then filled. From the outside things were right; the gunfire holes had streams of water shooting from them; but from the inside, air was bubbling into the tank from these holes, one of which he was breathing from. |
| micah | posted 17-Apr-2000 10:26pm That swimming pool incident must have really sucked. I have religion questions that need answering, would you be willing to contribute? micahcummins@webtv.net |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 17-Apr-2000 11:27pm Easily. That was my plan when I got up this morning. Though I was planning to rush my tarot site development for the same purpose. I just worked on a high priestess card last night & this morning that has painting layers depicting venus & isis, the crucifixion, auroras, pangaea, new eden, eye of horus, visions, living torah, nether realm, gift of fire, dark creation, ocean heart, terra from a sea of dragons, temple of holy ghost, & the gypsy fortune teller. I still have to make paintings for time changes, vibratory cell forces, mental glands, stellar sex force, peace & war, intuition, and subservient dominion over the realms of mineral plant & animal to make the card complete. I'm a concept person, I'm no scholarly fundamentalist in any religion who can quote matthew (but if i disagree with any text, I just flip open the book, and there's another quote to correct it.) Catch you real soon: I've already been pulling up cars for you. |
| enuffluv11 | posted 25-Apr-2000 11:54pm I only own 130 movies and work at a video store. My joy is movies! If I couldn't win it with film I could never win it, period. |
| regis | posted 29-Apr-2000 12:29pm i know a fair bit about film, a bunch of general knowledge, have a broad but not necessarily deep knowledge of science, know some stuff about geography (more since i started working at my current job, since we have offices in countries i'd never heard of), i'm learning more about history, and i know jack about sports. |
