| fiji | posted 30-Apr-1998 10:28am I want to try BeOS but they haven't got a driver for my graphics card yet |
| fiore | posted 30-Apr-1998 11:03am I use NT, mostly. I have Linux and NT 4.0 at my house. I am interested in the BeOS. I stay away from the WIN 9x junk. |
| milktree | posted 30-Apr-1998 11:05am Newton OS |
| romkey | posted 30-Apr-1998 11:17am In daily use, I use Win95 and Linux. I use MacOS and DOS a bit less often, but still "frequently". I use a Newton as universal remote control (theoretically :). And "PalmOS" or whatever the hell they call the PalmPilot OS. |
| mute | posted 30-Apr-1998 11:39am Unix! Mac! Be! I am alternative OS god! |
| bill | posted 30-Apr-1998 3:01pm first 4 all the time (daily?) DOS sometimes (though via win95) ** Yes PalmOS too (though I avoid it - I really just use it to beep at me). It may have been interesting to separate free Unixes from non-free. I used FreeBSD and Linux(both free), but I also use Solaris and HP-UX (not free) . *** I actually really like Win95, as I've adapted to it, learned it - I've become more and more happy with it. NT and Linux will not run most games, so Win95 is my sweat spot (plays games, and has good Internet tools). I do miss "grep" at home sometimes (I know I can get the win95 version), but I've started to use find-files an it's actually a lot better! |
| lizzie | posted 30-Apr-1998 4:51pm I use Win95 at home, and WinNT, Solaris, SunOS, SCO and AIX at work. |
| ear | posted 1-May-1998 9:06am OS/2! God dammit! You forgot OS/2 you losers! It's a fudging conspiracy, I tell you! You must be on Bill G's payroll. |
| Resy | posted 1-May-1998 3:16pm I have two machines on my desk - a PC with WinNT and Office 97 and an sgi Indy (IRIX) |
| daver | posted 1-May-1998 6:22pm MS for work, *NIX for fun... |
| joe | posted 1-May-1998 6:47pm bill, you have a sweat spot? i don't want to know about it. |
| jzp | posted 3-May-1998 8:00am i dont get listing "linux" and then "other unix"; that's a hell of a lot to dump in a bucket. why not just "commercial unix" vs "free unix"? |
| lelle | posted 3-May-1998 8:16pm Win3.1 I guess but I don't know much about it. Or any of them. |
| Timmi | posted 4-May-1998 1:17am NewtonOS!!! |
| treehorn | posted 5-May-1998 11:32am about equal amounts of time among 95/NT/(free)NIX/($)NIX. i enjoy the *NIXes, but really think that learning them is more like become a 32nd degree freemason than it is about running the "best" OS. |
| jjg | posted 5-May-1998 3:58pm MacOS beats the stink out of Windows95. And there is an awful lot in Windows95 which stinks. |
| plots | posted 6-May-1998 9:53am Microsoft sucks : ) |
| jonas | posted 6-May-1998 3:08pm I don't mean to use Win95. But they pay me to. Yes, thats it. Its THEM, not me. |
| amt | posted 8-May-1998 7:30pm Palm OS and Win CE, and used to do BeOS, and Unix |
| truss | posted 13-May-1998 1:38pm Wow. All of them except for BeOS, which I have seen but can't use yet (no support for PC SCSI). I've come to the conclusion that I can deal pretty well with any of them (save for DOS/Win 3.1, which annoys me). This means that I tend to be on the Devil's Advocate side on -every- OS flamewar, and tend to get flamed a lot. It's fun, though. :) ear: I also used OS/2 for a few weeks... after which I gave up, because it still refused to recognize 3 of my system devices, even after calling tech support. :) |
| Mark | posted 27-May-1998 3:48pm Mostly Linux and Solaris, occasionally Win95 (for games). I have used all the listed ones other than BeOS and MacOS (and an even greater number not listed), but the question asked about which were used frequently. |
