How old were you when you saw your first R rated movie?

For non-U.S. citizens, please use your country's nearest equivalent. I believe in England it's "Rated 18."

it's not too hard to get an r rated movie nowdays. The theaters and video stores don't care, and you can order one off the tv quite easily. I know, i'm only 14!

Good question, but I really have no idea. My parents never were particularly strict. I suspect it was fairly young. *X* on the other hand, I didn't see until probably my early 20s. Probably somewhat sheltered in that respect.

At age 8
'What's up Pussycat' & 'Paint your Wagon' (which first came out as an X, back when XXX meant something like 'Deep Throat' or 'the Devil in Miss Jones') were movies I saw at the drive-in with my mom. Also my freind and I saw 'Summer of 42' playing with 'Dirty Mary Crazy Larry'
'Summer of 42' was our goal: though it was PG, it had partial sex.
For 'Dirty Mary Crazy Larry', they had the first 10 rows cordoned off because of the chase scene on a hilly road. At that age, I wanted to see Warhol's 'Frankenstein' in 3D, because I'd been a stereogram buff since age three. Eventually I did see it (see it at a theater), and most of his other stuff on video.
My kids started seeing R movies from birth, that's the video age.

I think I was twelve. I went with my older sister, and I hated the movie, but don't remember what it was. It was some hippie movie, and had some disturbing images so I've blocked it out.

I'm not quite sure but I slept over a friends house so that we could sleep downstairs and watch Bo Derek in "10" at 2:30 in the morning on Preview. We could barely stay awake and could not understand the movie. After all that effort I'm still not sure what we saw but I do remember that we were disappointed.

It was Easy Rider. My friend's parents took us to the drive-in. Us girls sat up front and the 'rents and buggy sister sat in the back.....very embarrassing. I don't think I told my parents what we saw. it was really kewl. I still have the soundtrack (vinyl)

10 years old, staying at a hotel with my cousins on the way across Pennsylvania, and we watched 'Fame' on HBO. I don't remember the movie (it wasn't very interesting, not enough action), but I remember that it was rated R and my uncle didn't think they should let us kids watch it.

There was a point where somebody yells "That isn't music, that's masturbation!" and storms out of the practice room... my eldest cousin (at age 13) asked 'What's masturbation?' and his mother told him. He and his father both turned neat colors.

My first Rated 18 film was Heavy Metal. I didn't care too much for it, with the exception of the Captain Sternn segment, which seems to be everyone's favorite. My parents also enjoyed the movie, although their favorite segment was "B-17"

I remember it well. My parents sent my brother and I to see "Lassie Come Home", it was boring so we walked out, and went into the theater next door (it was a ciniplex). We didn't understand the scene where the kid is buying condoms, so when we got home we asked our parents about it. They thought it was pretty funny.

I was probably a few months old... maybe a year.. I do not ever remember a time where I wasnt allowed to watch "R" rated movies... simply because of the rating... The only thing I can remember not being allowed to watch, was "Dances With Wolves" when I was 8 or 9 and I think that was more about me giving my parents some time alone than an actuall content type thing.

I have a story. Last night my beautiful SO and I went to the video store. I heard a well dressed, rather proper couple nearby discussing whether or not to rent Being John Malkovich.

Stupid Woman: *with excitement bordering rigid stupor* Oh Being John Malkovich!

Tall Dopey Guy: Oh yes, I heard that was funny. I wonder if we would like it.

Perfect Me: *turning my head and looking over my shoulder* It was really good. I would recommend it.

Stupid Woman picks up the box.
Tall Dopey Guy smiles widely at me. He wants me.

Stupid Woman: *shrieks* It's rated R??????????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!What's wrong with it?

With that, Stupid Woman looks intently at me expecting a full review of anything and everything in the movie that might have caused it to get such an intense and objectionable rating.

Perfect Me: *long pause and "the look" complete with raised eyebrow*...well, I suppose, it depends on your point of view.

Perfect Me: *walks away shaking my head muttering something under my breath akin to*....that will fukkin teach me to talk to strangers in the video store...you'd think I'd fukkin' learn.....

This question always bothered me as I didn't know what our "country's nearest equivalent" was. It could be R because that has much the same rules, or it could be M because that's what most films rated R in America seem to get here. They're both equivalents, it just depends whether you compare content or rating scale.
