It depends how they're being served. For a stew or casserole I'll go with the meatier dog, but if it's something along the lines of a stir-fry I'll choose the cat because they cook up quicker. Okay, I admit it. I have no idea what this survey is asking. If you're not asking which I'd rather have, in what way am I supposed to prefer one or the other? Which I prefer to play parcheesi with? I don't get it. I do find it amusing that the banner I'm getting on this survey has a cat and dog on it. How wonderfully insidious! |
Enheduanna | | posted 15-Mar-2000 10:31pm |
ILJ: I can see how somebody might rather have a dog, say as a guard dog for safety, even though they prefer cats. Or perhaps they're allergic to cats, so they get the less-preferred dog instead, just for the sake of having a pet--they'd rather have the dog, to avoid allergies, even though they prefer cats. |
| guillem | | posted 16-Mar-2000 10:53am |
If it's not necessarily which I'd rather have, then WHY must I prefer?

| mary | | posted 16-Mar-2000 10:53am |
Dogs, they are actually useful in more ways than just being in the house. In my opinion cats are pretty selfish creatures, where dogs care more about your happiness than their own. |

Dogs are useless beings that are completely un-selfsufficient. You don't let them out, they mess on the floor. You show them food, they drool. You walk in the door, they jump on you. You stand still, they lick you. You walk past them, they bark. What are they good for? |

A dog will sit and watch you put up a set of shelves, and say "I don't have a clue what you're doing, but I love you anyway."
A cat will sit and watch you put up a set of shelves and say "I don't think you really meant to do that..." |
| gilly | | posted 16-Mar-2000 12:36pm |
No, the cat will say "I could do that, if I felt like it. And why are you doing that instead of petting and feeding me???" |
bill | | posted 16-Mar-2000 12:47pm |
It's funny how we project thought and desires onto our pets. Having seen this done by a number of people on the same pets, I'm now convinced that none of us know what they think or want. ...and we're all in fact revealing our own thoughts and desires when we do it. |
| ILJ | | posted 16-Mar-2000 1:30pm |
Every negative thing everyone here has said about cats sums up pretty much exactly why I love them. You look at a dog the right way and he'll get all excited..."What is it? Huh? Something for me? What? Huh?" You give the cat the same look and they wonder, rightly, why this idiot is staring at them and would they please not do that. The simple fact that dogs are trainable and cats are...well, far less trainable...is a key indication of their superiority. Cats are like royalty; dogs are just sycophants. |
| Oscar | | posted 16-Mar-2000 2:26pm |
I'm just kidding about kicking the dog. I don't like dogs when I have to live with them, but I don't go around kicking them for fun. |
| natsim | | posted 16-Mar-2000 8:09pm |
It depends on the situation! Sorry, but I just can't generalise. I hate little yappy dogs but adore sheepdogs running around chasing sheep. I hate cats when they make me sneeze, but I love patting them. |

Oscar, dogs are wonderful if they have something to do. I grew up on a farm, and we could point to a particular group of sheep and say "those ones, into this yard" and the dog would do it. Pretty darn clever, eh? |

I think I have a slight preference for cats, but I love dogs, too. Maybe it's just that I love ALL cats, while I think some dogs are obnoxious (due to lack of training). I really don't like dogs that get all rambunctious and jump up on me. |

I think I agree with natsim. Cats are better pets, but dogs are more useful. I can't stand useless dogs - the small yappy ones that get pampered and treated as if they were human are a complete waste of space. |

Interesting results in this survey. Dogs are the more popular pet (in the US, anyway...I think also worldwide) but more SC folks prefer cats. What does that tell us? |

| pcpr | | posted 20-Mar-2000 4:05pm |
Unfortunately I don't have the data with me, but last time I heard people complaining on TV about the way Americans "dispose" of their unwanted pets they suggested the trend is reversed now, and cats are more popular in US -- apparently because parents think cats are "maintenance free" and then they find out that, just like any other pet, they are not toys that don't need batteries but actually need training, attention, love, food, cleaning etc... it was particularly sickening to me seeing people literally disposing of their cats and dogs by dumping them in a chute; the animals would stay in the hot small building thirsty and hungry for days. According to the news reporter, people came from Germany to protest and help shut down a couple of installations like that in the South (they had seen the web site protesting the "Humane" Society that "maintained" the buildings) and the locals just did not get the fact that it's already bad enough the poor creatures will die and they should not die slowly of starvation, dehydration and heat stroke on top of that. I was crying for a long time and humans reached a new low that I had not previously thought possible after all I've seen in my life.
Anyway, cats seem to be more popular than dogs in US (comparison was by way of millions of animals and millions of households) now. It seems to help that most households that have a dog will have only one while most households that have cats will have more than one. |

I dislike cats more than I dislike dogs, mostly because dogs are beneath notice. |
Frostbrand | | posted 20-Mar-2000 4:17pm |
pcpr: I was watching Wolrd News Now and while I don't remember the exact figures, although American owned cats outnumbered dogs, almost 1.5 billion fewer dollars was spent in 1998 on cats then on dogs. Cats aren't no maintenance animals. Not by any stretch of the imagination. But they are low maintenance pets. |
| pcpr | | posted 20-Mar-2000 4:42pm |
Brian -- there are several perspectives to choose from here. Large cats rarely get to be 20 lbs, while large dogs can easily reach 120 lbs and eat like a grown-up human. So it does make sense that people might spend more dollars on one dog than on three cats, say. My statement about cats being more popular came from the number of pets alive and with a home. Granted, if I were on business selling pet stuff, my report to share holders might say dogs are more popular -- but then they'd be more popular to business, not the population at large. Most people getting rid of pets complain about "maintenance" that includes attention, training, feeding etc. For people getting rid of their cats it seems that having to clean the litter box was the last straw. Apparently, unlike dog owners, cat owners that get rid of their pets did not stop to think about the food-digestion-elimination cycle, all they kept saying to the camera was that they got the cats because they were told cats were maintenance free. Their quote, not mine. I know cats are low maintenance, but I don't expect a self-cleaning toy, I am aware that they are living creatures and have feelings. (I guess I'm not conveying what I mean here. Let's try again. The first complaint from dog owners getting rid of their pet was "it's too noisy" while the first complaint from cat owners getting rid of their pet was "it craps"/"unlike I was told, it's not maintenance-free" -- to which my reaction (to both sets of future-ex-owners will always be "Well, duh!" ) |

I am appalled at how many people enter my store and say "Help, I just got this(cat/dog/goldfish/gerbil/rabbit/lizard)10 minutes ago, what do I need for it?"
If only people would take time to research pets BEFORE they buy them.
It saddens me...and sickens me because as hard as I work every day to educate people about their pets and how best to care for them and WHY they might be behaving the way they do...many many times those same people end up back asking if we have a bulletin board so they can post an ad for a free(dog/cat/goldfish/gerbil/rabbit/lizard) they are looking to unload.

SueBee | | posted 21-Mar-2000 12:13am |
pcpr - You are absolutely correct. I just saw statistics in a pet magazine today saying that cats outnumber dogs in the US. Maybe what I had heard was that there are more households with dogs than with cats. I know that it is indeed changing. Cats are becoming more and more popular. BTW, one of my customers had told me she saw that news story about pets being dropped down chutes when they were unwanted. That is horrifying to me. |
| supplicant | | posted 21-Mar-2000 8:40am |
I still don't get these constant "litter box" references (and yes I know what one is). I never needed one for my cats and the vast majority of friends I have with cats have never used one... are they a lot more common elsewhere? |
| pcpr | | posted 21-Mar-2000 9:16am |
supplicant -- I had heard of them but never seen one until I moved to US... maybe it's just more common in US that cats are indoor pets. In Brazil cats and dogs are trained to go to the potty outside. |

SueBee | | posted 22-Mar-2000 11:50pm |
supplicant - Lots of people here in the US either never let their cats outside, or at least keep the cats indoors enough that they need to have a litter box. The small store where I work sells close to a ton (literally... 2000 pounds) of cat litter a week. I heard that some company is now marketing a litter box for dogs. **shaking head** No telling what they'll think of next. |
