Then again it asked how many mp3's I have if I listen to music, not how many music mp3's I have if I listen to music, or how many music mp3's I have that I listen to, or how many music mp3's I have if I listen to music mp3's That was very excessive on the unnecessary boring detail |
| romkey | posted 3-Mar-2000 12:31am lion - I haven't synchronized them since I installed the bigger hard drives |
| Enheduanna | posted 4-Mar-2000 3:14pm I checked that I don't listen to MP3s, as I sit here on the NH kitchen computer listening to Natalie Merchant MP3s. But they're not mine, and there was no option for "I don't have any MP3s on my own machine, although whenever I visit Romkey I have the benefit of listening to any of his 2565/3354 MP3s." |
| anonymous | posted 4-Mar-2000 5:03pm I don't understand how to use MP3s. |
| romkey | posted 4-Mar-2000 6:51pm Quick MP3 Tutorial MP3 is short for "MPEG-3" which is a standard for encoding (representing) sound files on computers. MP3 files take up a lot less space than regular sound files - a regular CD quality audio file will take approximately 176,400 bytes to store a second of sound; a similar quality MP3 file will take about 16,384 bytes to store a second of sound. The compression that MP3 does is "lossy", which means it doesn't give you a perfect reproduction of the original, but with audio this doesn't matter very much. With sound files taking this little space, you can usually store a lot of them on your computer. The first problem is getting them there. The second is playing them back. In order to get MP3 files there, you can either download them off the net or you can generate your own from CD's by using a CDROM drive and a special piece of software called an encoder or "ripper". I use Xing Technology's Audio Catalyst under Windows, but there are lots of other options. Most MP3 encoders are commercial products or shareware that you'll have to pay a few dollars for. There are also encoders available for Macintosh, and plenty of free options for Linux. Playback is easier and cheaper - under Windows, the Windows Media Player supports MP3 playback. Winamp is a pretty good piece of software I usually use. Sonique is also pretty popular. The legal issues related to MP3's are mostly concern that because files are so small, they're easy to share, and record companies are worried that consumers will trade MP3's instead of buy CD's. For more info, check out MP3.com; they have a lot of good info regarding MP3's, lists of software supporting them, and a lot of sound files you can (legally) download. |

| supplicant | posted 6-Mar-2000 9:35am A lot of *good* sound files you can legally download too |
| milktree | posted 7-Mar-2000 11:47pm wow, I have like 7200. Way, way off this chart. Yes, it uses up lots of disk, I have an entire computer to play mp3's, and it has a radio transmitter so I can listen to it anywhere in my house, and a web interface, so I can pick songs from any computer in my house. |

| romkey | posted 8-Mar-2000 8:42am Ars Technica has an interesting article comparing MP3 encoders. |
