| Gamera | posted 20-Feb-2000 10:25pm I like google a lot- jonathan pointed it out to me, and it's done better for me than any other I was using. I also really appreciate that the search screen is really clean and uncluttered. |

| drdt | posted 21-Feb-2000 1:43pm Yahoo and Altavista are each good for different purposes. Yahoo: when I am looking for information on a topic. Altavista: when I am looking for something I saw once and only remember a snippet of (poetry, song lyrics, articles containing a piece of text) |
| pcpr | posted 21-Feb-2000 4:39pm I use Sherlock to access the others -- usually the one that has most of what I want is AltaVista, followed closely by Excite and then a bunch of others. (This is funny, SueBee, Twister, did you both click Sherlock? My count reads 2 and I suppose it should read at least 3 by now... weird.) |
| SueBee | posted 21-Feb-2000 11:56pm pcpr - I went back and changed my vote to Sherlock. I wasn't so sure that was actually considered a search engine itself. I thought it was just software to access the search engines. But I guess since it's there, that's what I should mark. I sure prefer it over the search engine pages with all the ads and junk. |
| pcpr | posted 22-Feb-2000 12:32am SueBee: yeah, I prefer to access the others thru Sherlock too, but was quite surprised to find out that in OS 9 it now has banner ads too. Not nearly as obtrusive and annoying as the ones in some engines but it's there. I heard good arguments about the search engine sites not being too happy that Sherlock would strip their ads and they thought about impeding access by Sherlock but I wasn't too happy about it anyway. |
| Frostbrand | posted 22-Feb-2000 1:00am I usually use Yahoo, but if their server is down I use Snap. |

| Resy | posted 23-Feb-2000 4:56pm I like Infoseek ... |
| SueBee | posted 23-Feb-2000 11:38pm pcpr - That's a bummer about the ads, but I guess it's understandable. I used to always get the latest system software as soon as it came out, but I've found that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" has been working just fine for us lately. So it may be awhile before we upgrade to OS 9. |
| pcpr | posted 24-Feb-2000 4:46am SueBee -- well, if you wait until Summer, you can have MacOS X, which appears to be just great from the demo Jobs gave at the MacWorld Expo 2000 (try http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/mwsf00/) -- beware it's a ~2h presentation (you can skip parts, though). In any case we've found the upgrade to OS9 to be worthwhile. And we just can't wait until we have MacOS X. |

| SueBee | posted 2-Mar-2000 1:15am pcpr - I haven't had time to try that link yet. I've never heard anyone speak of MacOS X, I've only seen it in writing. Am I correct in assuming it's "ten" rather than "ex"? I'm confused because I thought it came out before there was an OS9. (Not that it would be the first time they've skipped a number.) |

| magbast | posted 2-Mar-2000 2:31am you callin me baby? hehe |
| pcpr | posted 2-Mar-2000 6:07am SueBee -- I've heard people talk about MacOS X pronouncing it "ex" but Steve Jobs says "ten" during the demonstration, I have no idea who's right or if they just changed their minds about the pronunciation. MacOS X Server came out some time ago but it didn't have some key features (including the Finder with the new Aqua interface and possibly the new graphics engine) and it was intended to be used as a group file server. OS9 came out around October/November '99. That link I included above talks about way more than the new OS -- in fact he starts the introduction of OS X at around one hour and eleven minutes into the presentation, if you're interested in seeing only the new OS... |
