What kind of martini do you prefer?

A martini is gin up or on the rocks with a splash of dry vermouth. Some people prefer vodka for a martini. Those are the original liquors used in a martini. Of course these days you can get all kinds of liquor mixtures that they pass off as a "martini" just by calling it that and serving it in an "up" glass. They are mainly just vodka or gin with a splash of whatever else. Most places ask you "vodka or gin?" when you ask for a martini.

I like my martinis with gin. And I like them dry. And I like them stirred. And I like them shaken. And I like them with an olive, or with a twist of lemon, or with a twist of lime. I just like martinis. Matter of fact, I might go make one now!

No offense to those who enjoy martinis, but...blech!! I don't like green olives or those little onions either.

The onions are stinky but flavorful...a vodka martini with just enough onion is wonderful...at least that is what I like..

Whatever is in my martini it must be very, very cold. And after some experimentation I've determined that shaking is better than stirring for achieving this.

I generally hate martinis. Although, I had a Cosmopolitan recently that I liked (it was served in a martini glass..)

In my opinion, if it doesn't have gin and vermouth (and usually a garnish -- olive, onion, or citrus peel), it is not a martini.
Possibly plain gin with the garnish could qualify (very VERY dry), but certainly no other liquors or mixers.

um... I forget. It's pink and has no olive in it. I suspect it's a lot weaker than a martini too.

...I do like martini olives.

Oh, I think it's a variation with cranberry juice. I think I saw someone drinking one once. Crazy Americans!

Vodka martinis are so pointless. And the sweet ones are downright nasty. What I like even better is a Negroni (gin, vermouth, and Campari, with a twist)

vos: it really depends on how much I have and if my other allergies are already full steam ahead or not... last time something happened it felt like I had a really nasty cold for 2 days (I had two bites of tiramisu [the recipe has maybe a couple of tablespoons of liquor in this huge "cake"]); the last time I actually had a drink it felt worse than the worst flu I've ever had (congested lungs and nose, very sore throat [which I never got with just flu], very high fever, pain everywhere etc plus skin rashes) for about 10 days. It doesn't have to be ingested alcohol either, when my allergies are acting up I can't even deal with things like Windex (glass cleaner) and other things that usually contain alcohol like perfumes, sprays, liquid deodorants etc -- a few minutes after skin exposure I get rashes.

I am an alcoholic, I don't drink. When I did, it was nothing but the cheapest biggest bottle of vodka and nothing else, no 'little' drinks.
