Would you commit perjury on the stand if it would save a loved one from jail time even if you knew he/she were guilty of the crime.?

I am not trying to bring my work home with me. I am merely making a survey.

I'm just terrible a lying, I'd botch it and end up in jail myself.

It would really depend on the crime and why he/she committed it.

I'd have to say "it depends," which really means "yes" under some circumstances. The ones that I can think of offhand are victimless crimes. BTW, I think the explanation text is gratuitous, but otherwise this is a great survey!

Depends on who it was, what they did, and if they actually did it.

Murder? I wouldn't. Smoking pot? Copying video tapes? I probably
would.

There are a lot of illegal acts that I don't consider criminal, that is, they don't harm anyone. I'd have no moral difficulty with someone getting away with such acts; my main question would be did I think I could get away with lying about it. I'm a crapty liar so probably not.

Maybe. It depends on the crime and whether or not it seemed justified.

I cant lie!
I'm a terrible liar so it would really show if I tried

If I know he/she is guilty, I won't perjure myself. However, if I know that he/she is innocent, I would probably lie if I thought it would get them acquitted.

tcb: You make a good point. There are some crimes I would perjure myself over; you named two of them. And unlike many of you nice folks, I'm an outstanding liar. * wink *

I think it would depend on the family member and the crime they were guilty of...more than likely I would tell the truth.

I think it would depend on the severity of the crime.

So Maggie, if I were to beat someone up that was talking about you and I was tried for it, would you stick up for me or let me fry?

Yeah, I couldn't see the creator until I submitted the survey. It's all making sense now! * smile *

If they were guilty of a crime which I believed was punishable, I would probably have to evaluate how 'loved' they actually are.

I doubt that I could successfully lie, because I totally suck at it, but if I thought that the law was wrong, and I thought that I could protect someone whom I thought was right by breaking that law, then I might try. More likely I would have to tell the truth because I would fear making the situation worse for everyone by lying.

It would depend on what the crime was.If it was murder no but petty stuff yes.

depends on your definition of it. I would, but in a white-lie sense. I would not fully come out and lie. I have been in and out of courts and have never ever lied, just don't answer what you don't want to.

Actually, I have decided that I would. I wouldn't LIE lie, I would just not let anyone make the situation out to be bad if I could help it. Even up to lying

I don't think so, but I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to testify against them. If I had damning evidence, and was being compelled to testify, I would probably skip the country.

After reading the other comments, I would like to add that:
1. I am a very good liar. I can and will lie under just about any other circumstances.
2. Without regard to which law was broken and how I feel about that, I believe that perjury is morally wrong whether the case is murder or parking tickets.

It would depend on the circumstances, but probably not. I hope that my friends and family never ask me to lie for them about something like this, because I think that would be an abuse of my friendship. Honesty is important to me.
