I would probably regard the roots mix the highest. Book: Harry Potter Series. You just cannot separate them. Luxury item: A mirror. I would try to escape. |
| Lysannus | posted 5-Mar-2013 4:24am Goodness 8 pieces of music. Really doesn't matter I am sure I would get sick of them quickly. The book would have to be 1 of my 600 page choral arrangement books. Luxury item easy a piano Which item of music? That would be the piano. I could then recreate any music I cared for as they are all in my head. Escape. Hell if I had enough food and water you would never see me again. |

| bill | posted 5-Mar-2013 9:00am The previous survey had some confusion over whether this was 8 songs or 8 albums, and I see that confusion continuing here. I take it from the website that they are asking for a song list, but confusingly say "discs" which for most of us implies an album (with a collection of songs on it). I'm going to pick songs. I don't actually have a list of songs off the top of my head to pick. But, as an exercice, I'm going to scan through my music collection and attempt to pick 8 of my favorites. And, just a caveat, I do with with some hypothetical dread since I'm quite certain that any songs I pick will not survive as a favorite due to being the only songs I have and thus heavily overplayed. But anyway... Gold Dust Woman by Fleetwood Mac Someone Like You by Adele (live version from VMA) 32 Flavors by Ani DiFranco but sung by Alana Davis Humors of Whiskey by ?? (I have a version from a Green Linnet collection) Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen sung by Jeff Buck Before I Knew by Basia Bulat Central Reservation (Ben Watt Mix) by Beth Orton Down to Zero by Bettye LaVette What You Give In Exchange For Your Soul by Bill Monroe & Doc Watson Hyper-ballad by Björk Bug Powder Dust (Kruder & Dorfmeister Remix) by Bomb The Bass Drinking in L.A. by Bran Van 3000 American Tale by Carbon Leaf Beautiful Word by DEVO Tiny Dancer by Elton John Beyond Belief by Elvis Costello Tiger Mountain Peasant Song by Fleet Foxes sung by First Aid Kit (YouTube version) Crazy by Gnarls Barkley Melt Your Heart by Jenny Lewis & The Watson Twins O Superman by Laurie Anderson Going to California by Led Zeppelin The City Sleeps by MC 900 FT Jesus Unsingable Name by Mike Doughty Christianity is Stupid by Negativeland Long Time by Cake Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy by Tchaikovsky In the Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg Screenwriter's Blues by Soul Coughing Do You Realize by The Flaming Lips The District Sleeps Alone Tonight by The Postal Service Birds Fly Away by Theresa Andersson John Barleycorn by Traffic Prime Numbers by TRS-80 Bizness by tUnE-yArDs Last Night Sleep by Can Hm... that's way too many and I actually skipped a lot of uncategorized music I have that I actually think has some of my favorites songs. I'm really have trouble narrowing that down to 8... seems hopeless and arbitrary. I already passed over so many good songs and I'm an emotional wreck from listening to most of these. Well, maybe we could assume I was suppose to list albums but I made my own out of mp3s (exactly what I would do). I did notice that I seemed to be trying to pick lot of different styles of music. And, I tended to pick songs that told some sort of story. Book: wild pick... The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer ... never read it, but I figure it would give me something to chew on. Luxury Item: deck of playing cards Which item of music do you regard most highly? Sorry, I can't even pick 8 let alone 1 Would you try to escape? Probably, more as something to do than a desperate need. I imagine I might build a raft but never use it. Partly, I just wouldn't want to take the risk of setting off onto the ocean in a raft and partly, I'm not sure if I would want to escape. I like solitude. But, I suspect over time it could get quite lonely and I'd begin to go even crazier than I am already. |

I take it > from the website that they are asking for a song list, but confusingly > say "discs" which for most of us implies an album (with a collection > of songs on it). As originally conceived, the expectation was that the guests would choose classical music, and hence a "disc" would be a symphony, a concerto, etc. Obviously, only a short excerpt of these would be played on the show (otherwise it could have lasted all day!). So when guests later started to choose popular music, the convention developed that a specific song was picked for the playlist, but you were assumed to be taking the physical disc it came on - which could, of course, be an album. But, as time has gone on, the "disc" of the title has generally been downplayed anyway and what, instead, is being chosen is an eight-item playlist. Some guests choose spoken-word recordings, or even clips of news broadcasts, as one of their discs. |

| Enheduanna | posted 6-Mar-2013 11:17am Discs: Mozart piano concertos (there's a particular one I have in mind, but I can't recall the number; this is my most highly regarded piece of music/disc) Ralph Vaughn Williams (compilation with Lark Ascending) Mike Doughty, Sad Man Happy Man Bizet, Carmen (3 discs) Paul Simon, Graceland Massive Attack, Blue Lines Book: David Foster Wallace, Infinite Jest Luxury item: a propagatable pot plant If I were able to find food and shelter and make a reasonable go at surviving, I probably wouldn't try to escape--I think I'd only try if I thought my odds of surviving were better if I did. I'd be more likely to keep a nice smokey fire burning and hope a ship passed close enough to see it. |
| FordGuy | (reply to Enheduanna) posted 6-Mar-2013 11:55am Bet you can't say, "propagatable pot plant," three times fast. |
| JessicaWoman99 | posted 6-Mar-2013 3:39pm For me it would have to be my country music I could not live on a desert island without my country music plus my Bible in hand don't know if I would try to escape or not depends and my luxury item would be i don't know |

| cloudhugger | posted 7-Mar-2013 10:56am Sorry about the music choices. I listen to music so rarely that I think almost anything would be just fine. I would stick along the lines of Mozart, Led Zepplin, Janis Joplin, Billie Holiday, U2, Dave Matthews. If I had to be very serious about this list, I would maybe change two choices. One book? wth. I am going to be dull and the book would be "surviving with just one book for dummies" So my luxery item will be a deck of cards. |
| cloudhugger | (reply to FordGuy) posted 7-Mar-2013 11:01am HAVING TROUBLE SAYING IT ONCE HERE LOL |
| cloudhugger | posted 7-Mar-2013 11:04am I forgot to add if I was going to try to escape. Yes. However... it may just happen I will escape to the islands of the rest of you because some of you chose the music I would have rather had on my list. And to bill's island, thinking that a deck of cards might be fun with two. That sounded like a euphamism. |

| they | (reply to gambler) posted 13-Mar-2013 7:42pm Okay. I just had another tooth out a few weeks ago because the old infection spread. I started swelling up again, so it's good they got it out fast. They found that the original bad tooth had drilled a hole into the side of the one in front of it. They think the infection went in that way. It was too far gone for a root canal, and so now I have to get an implant. Somehow, the whole ordeal messed up my bite in a way that may require me to get orthodontics if I don't want more problems in the future. Also, my hair is falling out, which is common after a long illness (that is my understanding). But, I'm back to work and getting back to my old self. I'm happy I'm not dead. Mary needs braces too, so our dental bills are going to be outrageous for a while. Even with insurance, an implant will cost me near 1k$ and I've already spent a few hundred having work done. Orthodontics are not covered at all. I discovered recently that it is more cost efficient to let a dental issue become a medical one before getting it treated. |
| gambler | (reply to they) posted 14-Mar-2013 10:19am Yea...........I cannot believe how expensive dental work is in the states (here to), about 18months ago or so, I was brushing my teeth in the shower, my hand was slippery with soap and I smashed the toothbrush into one of my front teeth, It was painful little did i know I had loosened the tooth and despite trying to save it (Glued wire across it and my other front tooth to stabilise it) I had to have a 4- tooth bridge......cost about $3500 ...ugh Glad ur getting better, Love Dx |
| they | (reply to gambler) posted 14-Mar-2013 3:24pm Wow! That's crazy. I can't get a bridge because they are back teeth, but I'm not sure that would be any cheaper for me anyway. I'd be happy not getting an implant and just leaving space back there, but they say the upper tooth will migrate down eventually, looking for its mate... which will cause more issues. I can't win! Thanks! I really am soo much better. |
