| Jane | posted 4-Jan-2000 9:28pm uh, no, but I probably don't count since there isn't much that I have to pay for myself. |
| seven | posted 4-Jan-2000 9:38pm Not far to go... |
| romkey | posted 4-Jan-2000 11:08pm I'm intentionally in debt. I have debt (a couple of mortgages) that I can many times cover with my assets but it's more sensible to take that money and invest it and get a greater return than the mortgages cost me. I don't like it, but the math works. |
| bill | posted 4-Jan-2000 11:13pm ditto, mortgage that we could pay off but don't for the tax deduction. |
| Very | posted 5-Jan-2000 12:14am yup. School loan and car loan. |
| lion | posted 5-Jan-2000 1:26am No debt and no steady income at the moment either. Its an odd feeling. |
| Avocado | posted 5-Jan-2000 1:48am I checked off 'No, but I have been in debt in the past.' I am presently in debt if you count my credit card balance, but as I pay that monthly, I don't count it as 'being in debt.' |
| ILJ | posted 5-Jan-2000 8:46am About $20k all told. |
| jzp | posted 5-Jan-2000 10:38am ...but will be when there is a house & mortgage. |
| jonathan | posted 5-Jan-2000 12:52pm I've got a mortgage. |
| eris | posted 5-Jan-2000 6:15pm I carry a fairly significant debt load, much of it offset by assets, and quite consciously and intentionally. I hope to retire it soon, though. The costs of higher education are partly responsible, and I would guess that more than half of people between 20 and 35 with college degrees (or higher) are in debt from it. |
| Enheduanna | posted 5-Jan-2000 7:08pm I don't really count credit card bills that will get paid in the next few days as debt. And initially it didn't even register that my school loans were debts, since they're in deferment, so I hardly ever think about them. And they're what I classify as "positive debt," at least for now, so they don't weigh on me in that yucky "you're spending too much money" way. So basically, no. |
| glen | posted 6-Jan-2000 2:19pm My only debt at present is my mortgage, but that counts. |
| pandora | posted 7-Jan-2000 11:11am About 17,000 dollars. |
| msgman | posted 8-Jan-2000 1:04pm It depends a lot on what you mean by "In debt". I've got credit cards, and a loan for my car, but nothing that gives me problems with the monthly payments. My assets are worth considerably more than my debts, so I'd have no trouble clearing all of them if I had to - the main reason I don't is convenience. |
| supplicant | posted 10-Jan-2000 9:26am My expenditure exceeds my income, but I still don't consider myself in debt as such. |

I have a small car payment and some credit card bills.
I have a dentist bill I am making payments on.
I am definitely not in dire straits. I have fabulous credit and I am working towards paying off my debts within the next few years.
