I would only be willing to do some of these things to another person if they were the proximate cause of my impending death.

I think it depends on how I am going to die.

I definitely wouldn't be willing to give up someone or something else's life for my own or cause others to sacrifice anything for me under any circumstance.

I can imagine situations when I might do any of those.

I need to be in a specific situation to decide whether or not I would cause or force others to do anything.

I left all the ones below "others' dignity" blank because I really don't know without being put in that situation.

Oscar: beware, this may be a trick question. What if it is revealed that others are already dying or suffering so that you may live?

If asked to do any of these things or die...I'd die.

i would have to be faced with death to really answer the question, but as it stands...i would only give up my material things...cuz i don't have much of anything...if i did change anything or give up anything, it would only be my own, never another person's...and i would do it only for the sake of my family!

What is life without freedom and dignity? Nothing.

Twister: You'd rather die than give up your material possessions/money? And leave your child motherless?? Money can be replaced, why do you consider your life worth less than your possessions?

Actually, I should have added the options "sacrifice the life of your family" and "cause or force others to sacrifice the lives of their families" to the survey. The results have really surprised me on this one.

drdt: That could be, but as far as I know, nobody is.

I'm a little stuck on the "give up your dignity" option. I'm not sure, because I've never been in a situation like this, but I don't think doing something that would normally be humiliating would sacrifice my dignity in any way in a life and death situation.

I would kill in self-defense, or assist in a suicide, but not kill an unwilling innocent. Or anyway I'd like to think so.

So Oscar, you're a vegetarian who basically lives in an isolation tank and never buys anything from anyone, especially from exploited work forces?

I think I would probably kill in self defense if I had to.

I also know that just by living every day some of my actions result in other beings' unhappiness, and I find that very difficult to deal with sometimes. It's a slippery slope.

I'd certainly kill to save my own life. I'd agonize about it later.

No, I am not a vegetarian, nor do I live in an isolation tank or sustain from buying things.

I checked a bunch of these, but some are conditional on whether or not I thought my survival could remedy the situation causing these things to happen in the long run. I would be willing, for instance, to force someone else to give up their freedom temporarily, if I thought I'd be more likely to stage a coup, foment rebellion, etc. if I were alive than dead. Though sometimes martyrdom is the best way to make changes, too...

My answer would change daily, depending on how I'm feeling about my life.

Possessions, dignity, freedom and beliefs can be regained. Life can't.
