I've never handled snakes, but if these were my options, I think I'd go with that one.

Sword swallower. Tee hee. On yet another semi related note, since I'm too lazy to go back to the dream survey, the night before last I had a dream that I gave a lollipop to Steven Tyler (from Aerosmith) in my friend's parents' bed. And he said 'That was nice' in a really kind way afterwards. I was surprised.

Hey what the hell's goin on? It marked it out when I wrote 'lollipop' Dammit. Oral pleasure. I hate censorship.

oh, I forgot that I threw that in there. What do people think of the silly swear blocking? I can turn it off, or make it optional perhaps.

Make it optional. If I write 'fudge', I want to see 'fudge'. If we have SC denizens that will be damaged by reading certain words, they can request either that we refrain from using those words or that you add some substitution logic.

I think it's kind of funny. ...especially when it makes people mad and they swear more, and that gets filtered too. tee hee.

Fudge? Fudge! FUDGING STUPID FUDGING SWEARING BLOCKING! (hmm... this won't seem like such a good idea when it gets turned off ;))

I personally find swearing disturbing. I'd love to see it replaced with symbols all the time. Call me a prude, but please at least allow me to customize whether or not I see swears.

I like the swearing block.

Yeah, I'd be pretty psyched to see optional swear blocking. What words will be considered swears though? How about piss? Crap? Damn? bewb? Titmouse? Wankel Rotary Engine?

For the curious among you, the word that got censored above is the other spelling of "dam."

bill - Good point. How about giving us the asterisked versions so that we know but the sensitive among us aren't offended? Any plans on making a survey to gauge reaction to this feature?

I just added optional support for block swears - blocking is on by default. Go to Customize to turn it off.

A good idea to make it optional - apart from the above complaints the fact is compulsory censoring doesn't work. I've been on several places before that censored swearing, so we just put full-stops in the middle, i.e.: da.mn or spelt it differently: dam.

supplicant - I find it remarkable that people felt so thwarted they had to come up with alternate ways to swear. Is swearing that necessary to some people?

Fudging censor me and I'll become so fudging obscene all my gosh darn comments will look like this:
fudge crap chicken dog piss twinkie etc......
*giggles*
I don't want to see symbols instead of swearing.
Thanx for making it optional! * smile *

Jody: occasionally swearing is a very useful tool, but it has basically nothing to do with that and everything to do with censorship. If anyone censors me I will just work out ways to get around it and then be obnoxious in what they were trying to stop me from doing, because I find censorship completely unacceptable. (note: I don't see optional filtering as censorship, but compulsory I do).

supplicant - aren't there better ways to spend your energy?
supplicant
posted 23-Dec-1999 11:49pm
There are quite a few possible answers to that one... 1) Yes there are. 2) No, it's an important issue 3) It requires very little energy 4) Yes, but not many 5) Not when you're bored 6) Yes, but then there are much better ways to spend energy than doing many things we do anyway... just depends on how you look at it. We were going to be there because we wanted to anyway, it took little extra energy to try and fight their censorship at the same time as well.

fire eater, if i had to choose.
bill: i find it interesting that you defaulted everyone to the swear-filter. Is it (and offense surveys) an option at account creation now, separate from the daunting list of customizations? I wonder if there will be any correlation between those who hide offensive surveys and those who use the swear filter - eg any correlation between disliking ideas and disliking language. Oh, and while I'm at it, Bill, have you thought about adding the 'what's new' info to the 'new surveys' email people get? I'm sure I'm not the only person who rarely vistsing anything but their selected view of surveys, etc and therefore don't see new features until they get discussed in a survey.
Jody: I find it odd that, regardless of your personal prefeence, someone so well-acquainted with written language, concepts of context and exoking a mood would argue against someone's language choice.
