What do you most often call a carbonated, non-alcoholic beverage?

Soda. People from the South think that you pop people are hilarious.

In my part of the world, all soft drinks are cokes. Go figure.

drdt: I actually do not like tonic water. Tonic is just the generic term that I use, I think it may be a Massachusetts thing.

Another big one in NC is drink. Not a drink, some drink. It means soda. "Will you get me some drink?" That one really gets on my nerves.

I remember my first day in Colorado. Everyone called it Pop. I called it Soda. Many a fight started over this. I still call it soda, and people still tell me to fudge myself when I do so.

I'm trying to say "Cola", as I'm hoping to avoid the "Is Pepsi OK?" response I get from saying "Coke" (when I actually prefer Pepsi). Sometimes I say Pepsi... Oh, and I usually put the work "diet" in front of Coke, Cola or Pepsi.

I grew up in california and we called everything a "coke", but now I live in North Dakota and everyone here calls it a "pop". They argue with me about my terminology.

For the people who call it coke, do you mean all non-alcoholic car-bevs or only the brown, cola ones? That is, do you also refer to Sprite or orange soda as coke?

Soda would be a generic name. Cola and Coke are reserved for cola and Coke.

When I say "coke" I am referring to most all beverages such as Coke, Pepsi, Sprite, Dr. Pepper, Surge, Mt. Dew, Mello Yello, Orange soday, 7 Up, Mr. Pibb, Root Beer, Diet Coke, Cherry Coke, etc......

I call it coke because I don't drink the other non-colas.
Well, sometimes Mountain Dew. I wouldn't call the Coke though.

I wonder if this is a regional thing. I usually say pop. My friends always laugh when I call it soda.

Damn, I obviously grew up in a so-well-off-they-all-had-sticks-up-their-butts part of California. We only called Coke "coke". The generic term was "soft drink"...

If people check Cola or Coke, do they still call it Cola or Coke even when they're drinking lemonade? And does champagne fall under the category "alcoholic coke"?

Soda. When I say it, my mouth curls in disgust. The brown kinds are the worst. I was brought up without soda and once I tasted it, I never did so again unless forced to. I'm weird, huh? I know, I know.

Jade - nah.... I grew up with soda and nowadays I think it's pretty gross too.
