| jettles | posted 21-Nov-2009 7:32am i have never been and we really don't think we would like it............ we have thought about taking a short cruise for 3 days 2nights to check it out because everyone seems to love it so much but i don't know! |
| dab | posted 21-Nov-2009 7:48am The mega cruise ships don't much interest me but a cruise on a smaller ship, or a sailboat, or the ferry up the Inside Passage sounds like fun. |
| bill | posted 21-Nov-2009 8:06am Yes, twice and enjoyed it both times. The first was in the early 90s, a short 3-day budget Bahamas cruise on Carnival (it was actually combined with a Disney World stay). The second was a couple years ago to Alaska on Princess for 6 days or so, and it was nicer though still affordable. There are aspects of cruises I'm not into (e.g. formal dinners), but it's nice being on a big ship on the ocean and visiting a new place every day (with various optional tours to pick from or not). Cruising up to glaciers was really cool. Also, eating breakfast early in the morning in Stagway bay, watching Orcas cresting was great. |
| labjog | posted 21-Nov-2009 12:17pm I would love to but I'm afraid I would be sea sick the whole time. |
| thecomic22 | posted 21-Nov-2009 3:07pm No, but I think it would be really cool to go on one someday. |
| gambler | posted 21-Nov-2009 3:09pm Living here, I see alot of cruise ship passengers, one thing that concerns me is the cost of stuff like drinks etc, I hear they really kill you with things like this, but I am still interested |
| Biggles | posted 21-Nov-2009 3:55pm What's with the implanted advertising? |
| cerealkiller | posted 21-Nov-2009 4:18pm No. Only reason I'd like that is so I could eat and drink 24 hours a day. I don't care for being around a lot of people and being forced to sit and eat with strangers. |
| Richard47 | posted 21-Nov-2009 9:22pm Yes, several times on both coasts and always enjoyed them. The shorter trips on smaller boats have, at times, been uncomfortable due to the condition of the sea. Sometimes sea sickness is unavoidable but with the large cruise ships...that is never the case. |
| Strider | posted 21-Nov-2009 11:03pm I've been on three cruise. |
| Enigma | posted 21-Nov-2009 11:52pm I might consider a cruise when I'm in my 70's. Maybe. They don't really appeal to me. |
| TeddyMiller | posted 22-Nov-2009 10:11am I've been on quite a number of cruises: Panama Canal, Western Mediterranean, Norwegian fjords, Patagonia, Columbia River, a Belgium canal cruise, etc. |
| labjog | (reply to Richard47) posted 22-Nov-2009 11:12am So, are you saying someone who gets seasick easily wouldn't on a large ship? |
| Richard47 | (reply to labjog) posted 22-Nov-2009 8:17pm > So, are you saying someone who gets seasick easily wouldn't on a large
> ship? There is always the possibility that someone could get psychologically seasick, just with the knowledge that they are traveling on water and medication usually helps with that. But your seasickness would not be due to the motion of the cruise ship. You literally feel no motion. Now, on smaller boats and ferries...the motion of the ocean is a factor when it comes to stability. With high rippling waves, you do feel yourself go...up and down...up and down (like an amusement park ride). In that case, it is unlikely the seasickness medication would do any good...as it cannot stop you from feeling the rocking motion. And people get sick. The best thing to do when planning these smaller boat excursion is to ask the coast guard how 'comfortable' is the sea is. They do know and it changes day to day, hour by hour, depending on wind or sea storms off in the distance. |
| FordGuy | posted 23-Nov-2009 7:11am Jodi and I took a cruise, 3 days to the Bahamas and back. It was ok. I didn't really care for being cooped up in the ship though. If I had it to do all over again I'd rather fly straight to Nassau and just stay there. And yes, the bar tab from the ship cost more than the cruise itself. When you look at a resort like Breezes in Nassau, you get all your food and drinks included in the price, and at the end of the day, is cheaper than a cruise. And they have a beach, pools, bars in the pools, and tours, etc. I don't think I'll go on a cruise any time soon - the only think I think I could handle is an Alaska cruise, but that'd be REALLY expensive because I'd want to do 2 weeks with all the tours. You spend a lot of time on land, going on trains, etc. Pricey though. |
| Enheduanna | posted 28-Nov-2009 12:18am No; it's something I might be interested in doing but it's not on my must-do list. |
| ASB | posted 19-Dec-2009 8:13pm No I have not been on a cruise and dont know if i would want to. I enjoy laying on the beach all day everyday on my vacations so I am not so sure about the boat part. |
| ASB | posted 19-Dec-2009 8:18pm I have heard from friends who love it and friends who hate it. I am with Fordguy I think I would rather just flay and stay at my destination and not cruise around |
