I think it's probably intuition, instinct...perhaps you've heard it in the past.

No, I tend to remember where I learnt most things.

All the time. The other day on my lunch one of my coworkers was looking at the paper. There was a picture of Cheryl Hickey (on a fashion page). She asked us who she was - I said "She's one of the hosts of E.T, the Canadian one." Then I said "Why do I know that? I haven't had cable in years...."
This is just the most recent example. There are many others.

Not exactly........... I have lots of random trivia in my head (especially entertainment/film) , what happens is Mitzie, friends will say "How the Hell did you know that?"

e.g I told someone just recently that Debbie Allen of "Fame" the movie and TV series is sister to Phylicia Rashad (Clare Huxtable on the Cosby show) ... they were like WHY would you know that?

No. I pretty much know my sources.

..or did you mean "Why did I bother to remember that?"?

I am not a very big trivia buff and most of my factual information comes from a medical career, and then a career is social services so it makes sense that I would know information of that sort. I know some Hollywood/film trivia but never ask myself where the knowledge originated from. Reading/ television/ internet are the usual suspects.

I have to say it. How do you know that?!!? We had a dog that gave himself head. It was funny at first but he did it so often that it got rather annoying.

All the time. I find it incredibly annoying that I know such useless stuff, when I can't for the life of me remember something as important as the differences between antibiotics.

Just carry dice or coins around with you.

 * laughing out loud * Nothing like tossing a coin to encourage a patient to have confidence in you! * grin *

"Hmmm, it says you're allergic to penicillin. Augmentin may or may not be a penicillin - I'm not sure, but I have some very advanced technology to help me to decide..."

I'd get a kick out of a doctor who did it jokingly though.

Jokes are good for developing a rapport with patients, but it depends on the patient and the situation. For example, a comment like "Surgeons don't usually know their right from their left" (as spoken by my current placement partner) might be okay most of the time, but not when someone is about to go to theatre to have their left kidney removed!

Yeah, obviously it depends on the patient too. Still, I'd prefer taking chances that humor fails 3% of the time over not having any, although indeed, the consequences of it failing are higher in medical circumstances. So too is it's value though when someone could really use some relief from their stress..

Yes, I don't really wonder very often about why I know. I have been surprised that I KNOW it at all!

Though knowledge can be acquired on a sub conscious and/or instinctual leveI, I usually remember the the point of impact, especially when it comes to detailed information.

I was playing trivial pursuit and got the answer wrong - missed out on a pie and everything!
