I think it's interesting that I didn't pick up that one font was serif and one sans serif until I read the answers. I just thought the serif font was smaller and that's what the question was about.

I saw your nitpick... all the fonts are 12 point. But, I agree that the serif looks smaller. I'm not sure if it actually is... it may be an illusion or just depends on how you define it.

I read something that said people read black text on white background in a serif font better than otherwise. So, I thought I'd try to put this to the test.
...I'm not sure if my test was fair, though. Maybe I should have been more cafeful about anti-aliasing (e.g. number of colors). And the whole thing with the serif font looking a bit smaller too.

I read white text on black more easily. I guess I'm not "most people". Or, maybe that test wasn't accurate.

so far, slightly more people seem to prefer white on black, so you're not alone

I'm going to say number four. The font in 2 and three is kind of hard to read.

Number 2. The white on black ones are difficult for me because I have some vertical double vision, which is worse with bright things.

Black print on white background - Arial Because Arial print is bigger, with the same point, as Times. Times is prettier however...

Bill, I agree. The 12 point on Arial is bigger than the 12 point on Times.

No. I don't like initiating anything to be the center of attention. It's not a big thing to me and I hadn't even noticed until someone else mentioned it. And you're gonna see a birthday cake icon next Tuesday - another non-event in my life that will pass with no family recognition. My wife has no idea when my birthday is ("It's sometime in November isn't it?")

I think it's funny that you should ask if I can read.

White on black, serif.

But I'm extremely biased in favour of serifed fonts, so it's not really fair.

No, TNR are generally smaller than Arial. It's not an optical illusion.

#4...The other three examples are a bit blotchy (but maybe that is just the way that they post). #4 has a consistency with the font.
