Who do you think originally authored the following quote? (Answer without looking it up first * smile * )

"If the statistics are right, the Jews constitute but one percent of the human race. It suggests a nebulous dim puff of star dust lost in the blaze of the Milky Way. Properly the Jew ought hardly to be heard of, but he is heard of, has always been heard of. He is as prominent on the planet as any other people, and his commercial importance is extravagantly out of proportion to the smallness of his bulk. His contributions to the world's list of great names in literature, science, art, music, finance, medicine, and abstruse learning are also away out of proportion to the weakness of his numbers. He has made a marvelous fight in the world, in all the ages; and has done it with his hands tied behind him. He could be vain of himself, and be excused for it. The Egyptian, the Babylonian, and the Persian rose, filled the planet with sound and splendor, then faded to dream-stuff and passed away; the Greek and the Roman followed, and made a vast noise, and they are gone; other peoples have sprung up and held their torch high for a time, but it burned out, and they sit in twilight now, or have vanished. The Jew saw them all, beat them all, and is now what he always was, exhibiting no decadence, no infirmities of age, no weakening of his parts, no slowing of his energies, no dulling of his alert and aggressive mind. All things are mortal but the Jew; all other forces pass, but he remains. What is the secret of his immortality?"

Two things make me want to say Mark Twain (even though I've never seen this quote attributed to him before).

Firstly, the writing style is full of Twain's wit and insight. Secondly, the survey about a Mark Twain quotation created last week!

I see nebulous, Milky Way & planet....so I immediately think of Carl Sagan.

Despite an attempt to sound laudatory, I suspect this of being a preamble to an anti-Jewish screed. Eichmann is the only Nazi on the list, so I'll go with him.

Apparently it's Mark Twain.

Well, I threw Eichmann in there for a couple of reasons. First, just for the potential irony involved. He was after all the engineer for Hitlers Final Solution of the Jewish Question. Second, because of the actual irony involved. Eichmann was born and raised in Palestine, was educated by a Zionist Rabbi and spoke fluent Hebrew. When the Mosad kidnapped him in Argentina in 1962, he told his captors, "I was always on the side of the Jews."

I wish I knew more about each of the people on your list to make a better guess.

I noticed while I was staring at the options that 7/10 of these end in an 'n'. So, without any logic whatsoever, I chose Theo Roosevelt.

I read through it several times. I can see it both ways. It does appear to be a tribute to Jews... but at the same time, it is questioning them in a way that makes me suspicious. Perhaps I should research Mark Twain. Since you looked it up, do you know if this was written from the position of hate or awe?

I didn't actually get that far when I looked yesterday, but I just went back and looked today. Apparently Twain was quite the champion of the Jews. The passage in this survey is the end of a fairly long essay Twain wrote for Harper's Magazine. Here's a little background.

Well, apparently you're right. According to Wikipedia, he was born in Solingen, Germany and didn't get to Palestine until 1937. Hmm, I could swear I read somewhere he was born in Palestine, but don't remember where I read that.

I'm going by external clues here. I am still positive I read this somewhere. I am thinking either in The House on Garibaldi Street or William Shirer's The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, but since I can't track down my copies of either of these right now, I have to be content with what I can track down on the web for now. I'll check this out further though.

Since he was thought to be "retarded" in school when indeed he was a jew in an all christian school therefore subdued and non-interactive with the other children. Albert Einstein. Or was it Jesus Christ?

Interesting that it was Twain. I guessed that it was either H.L Mencken or possibly Heinlein and finally picked Mencken.

Sometimes the conversations go back and forth so much I lose the string of thought. Must have missed it. :o)
