It's nice when it works, but I have a hard time getting it right, I guess. Listening to other people's problems might make them feel better, but it usually just confuses me if I have no useful advice. Other times, people just don't want or don't need help. But I love to help.

Yes, of course...this is very therapeutic & uplifting. While cheering someone up, you usually also tap into the things that cheer you up.

Yes, more than once but I can't say it was a conscience decision. I just did it and felt better. I think when I feel poorly I have more compassion for others because I'm there too.

It's best when the both of you are upset about the same thing or something similar. Then you can gripe (or whine) about it together, and that's really helpful because you know you're not alone. Humans, being such social creatures, we tend to get worse when we feel alone on something.
