Most directly, it was at my grandmother's funeral in 2007. My uncle died in 2008, but I didn't go to his funeral, so I didn't experience it as directly. Or it was last night, when I ate some (dead) meat.

It depends what you mean by "experienced death". About nine patients died during my last four week placement - I'd come to know some of them quite well, but I wouldn't say that I was close to any of them and I wasn't there when any of them actually died.

Nothing that was really close, but an aunt and a friend's neighbor died in the last year or two. Both were good people, but also fairly old and had lived long lives.

Well, Michael Jackson (of course), but personally...It would have to be a friend of mine, Cisco who had an alcohol/crack problem that he just could not tackle...no matter how many interventions and how many treatment centers that he went to. He was only 40, and he was found alone in this apartment...his heart had literally exploded. It was tragic but a bit expected. This happened in 2007.

Last April when my grand-aunt died. My family wasn't affected by her death as much because they live closer to her and they knew of her medical problems so it was in some ways expected. To me it came as a shock. It's very sad, she was always so sweet to me.

In my line of work it is very common. It does not stop me from opening my heart to the people in my care...all of whom are at end of life. I love them even more deeply. I have attended deaths, given comfort to the dying and their families and even participated in postmortem care.

My last uncle died about a month ago but I think a real experience for me was my brother in February 2006. Alcohol did it's job at the age of 59! I am the youngest of 5 now-4 of us left.

My grandma passed away less than a month ago. I visited her the night before and she seemed fine. The next morning, my dad told me that she passed away. I went to see her and it was surreal. Apart of me thought that she was still alive as she lay on the bed. It was the first time I saw a dead body.
