| LindaH | posted 23-Sep-2009 5:24pm I like the subject of psychology, and wouldn't mind doing studies and whatnot, but I really wouldn't want to work one on one trying to help crazy people. |

However, many people don't realize that in order to practice it you've got to get at least a Master's degree. They'll do bachelor's and then complain how they can't get a job in their field. My aunt and uncle are psychologists and they both have their PhDs. |
| Enheduanna | posted 23-Sep-2009 6:41pm I guess I wouldn't mind it, but I have no intention of becoming one. |
| Crayons | (reply to Iseult) posted 23-Sep-2009 6:58pm Oh, I see. I'm split between art and psychology right now. I mean, drawing, that's very natural to me, and I think if I did at least some psychology, in college, it would make my pictures have more meaning than they already do. |
| RainingFeathers | posted 23-Sep-2009 7:24pm I love this kind of information, and would really enjoy researching. However, I am horrible at writing (find that to be one of the most stressful things anyone could ask me to do), and I know that funding generally comes through publishing papers. I wouldn't be able to do that. And I'm definitely not interested in the clinical side of things, just the research.
Short answer, no. |
| cerealkiller | posted 23-Sep-2009 8:31pm I already have a career, one I've had for over 30 years. I would however find psychology interesting. |
| Biggles | posted 23-Sep-2009 8:38pm My older brother wants to be a psychologist. He did a BSc in Psychology and then trained as a teacher. He's working in a special school (autism) at the moment but plans to train as an educational psychologist in the future by doing a PhD. If I decide to go into mental health, it would be as a psychiatrist rather than a psychologist. Currently, I really don't see that being where I end up, but I have a 6 week psychiatry placement in early 2010 and won't rule out the speciality completely until I've seen it in practice. I think I'm more likely to choose a career in one of the hospital-medicine specialities though. |
| Galomorro | posted 23-Sep-2009 9:24pm No, but I do like to read about peoples' behavior and the like. |
| bill | posted 24-Sep-2009 5:56am Aren't we all amateur psychologists already? |
| Iseult | (reply to Crayons) posted 24-Sep-2009 8:36am That's a nice way to look at things. If the two are of interest to you, you should also look into Art Therapy. |
| southernyankee | posted 24-Sep-2009 8:13pm Not in particular, and it would probably be annoying having to fudge my studies constantly to justify more funding. On the other hand, you get to do cool experiments once in a while and/or mess with people. |
| Melf | posted 26-Sep-2009 3:17pm Absolutely not. |
| Melf | (reply to Crayons) posted 26-Sep-2009 3:18pm I think study of most subjects (other than, like, French) would add a deeper level of understanding to your artistic output. |
| coffee5437 | posted 30-Sep-2009 10:10pm Not a chance! |
| they | posted 12-Oct-2009 9:53pm I've always been torn on this subject.
I find the psychology of the human mind to be fascinating. Part of the reason I SC is to see how other people think. I just love finding out what is going on in people's heads and how they arrive at certain ideas. Problem is, I wouldn't want to listen to people's problems all day (like I do now for less pay) .... and I don't think there are very many problems that can be solved by a psychology either. |

I thought everyone who hated psychologists, you know, for helping people and getting paid for it.
