Do we run the risk of sacrificing comfort for fashion?

I'm putting no options so I can start an open ended discussion.

Absolutely - many people often do. Think about girdles and starvation diets and high heels for women. In the past, there were corsets and there was foot binding...I could go on, but I won't.

Yes. I'd like to see us move into total comfort at the expense of appearance. Like that will ever happen. Society has it's priorities backwards. We have to sit in discomfort for looking decent. No one should care what another person looks like. Not only when it comes to clothes, but the way people carry themselves, the way they move, their facial expressions, their behaviors. That crap means nothing next to physical comfort.

I could go on and on and on about this. It's one of the ways society is screwed up.

Yes! I look at some of the "trendy" clothes the under-30 set wears these days at work, and I just go, "That CAN'T be comfortable."

Yes, and there should be a law to prevent this.

I've spent all day wearing nice flat, sensible shoes. My feet and ankles hurt like mad after a day on my feet. I can't imagine how people cope when they're tottering around in heels - don't see too many of those in the hospital!

People do sacrifice comfort for fashion. Women that is. High heels are a prime example. Guys don't care about fashion that much, but I'd say those idiots wearing pants hanging down to their knees can't be comfortable.

You ask this as if it's a new thing. People have been sacrificing comfort for fashion for all of recorded history, as far as I can tell.

I would never sacrifice anything for fashion, except babies.

I think far too many people sacrifice comfort in the name of fashion. I've never understood it. Especially when it comes to high heels on women.

How true * laughing out loud * I found myself spending way more on shoes than usuall, just looking for that comfort factor, Birkenstocks wins, hands down.

I had the comfiest shoes ever when I was working as a nursing assistant. They were so good that I kept wearing them even after they started to fall apart, and when a lady accidentally pooed on one of them, I just put it in the washing machine! I threw them away after my last shift though, and have never found another pair as comfy * frown * Just a shame that my shoes now have to be that bit smarter or I'd try to track down another pair like them.

I guess that's true for some people. Around here, it's all about comfort (and little about fashion). I try to dress a little nicer than the average person. I feel more comfortable when I don't think I look ugly, anyway.

I actually think, the current fashion is far more comfortable than those in centuries past.

I'm going to say I agree with what you say about behaviors most of all. I'm sometimes concerned about sitting the right way, or acting the right way.. I'm uncomfortable trying not to make myself look stupid. I'm glad I'm what I consider intelligent, so at least I don't sound as stupid as many other people do. That comes more easily to me.

If society evolves and matures, we'll stop having to sit just right and talk just right. It would get much more casual and relaxed. I doubt that will happen, though. Too many people think that would be a bad thing. * poker face *

I don't, but I know others do. Sometimes it hurts to be stupid and sometimes the pain is tolerable.

Yes, there's always that risk. We don't know what our culture is going to be in 50, 100, 150 years from today. Its quite possible at some point in our history, we will go back to how people were in the '50s and demand coat and tie just to be outside, or worse, whatever it was that people wore back in the 1800's.

It's also possible that we could leave the house naked and no one will care.

True. It could go either way.

I guess it somewhat depends on how well we deal with radical Islam (or other threats). If they win, and get their wish to rule the world, your idea to walk naked down the street is pretty much out. If the Indians (the dot ones) or Chinese take over the world, due to their work ethic / patent infringement, who knows what their fashion taste will be like. And don't get me started on Japan, though I don't think they'll be powerful again.

Remember, the US isn't the only country in the world. And people in those other countries tend to be more formal and uptight than the US. If the US ceases to be dominant culturally and economically, you can kiss your non-formality freedoms goodbye.
