Let's say this child is 16, and will be 17 this October, for the sake of this survey.

If they're fairly well behaved, have decent to great grades, I figure why not. I'm not going to be all draconian on a good kid. Save that stuff for the little terrors. I can't stand these parents who think you have to be authoritarian with your kids all the time regardless of what they're actually like.

Not for the example you gave. Would I let my 7 year old listen to Enimen? No

It's a hard question.

I wouldn't want to have to forbid my kids anything. I'd like them to know better for themselves.

I would try and encourage them to explore different types of music.

EDIT: I didn't read the whole 17 y.o. kid. At that age, they can decide for themselves. Although if they picked up bands like Romper Stomper, or other white supremacist crap, I'd sit them down and have serious talk with them.

I listen to all sorts of things like that, and I can handle it. So I don't see why any kid needs to be forbidden in this way.
I listen to music that opposes the Catholic religion that I was raised in, but that's because I opposed it BEFORE I started listening to the music. Just because so and so does it, that wouldn't convince me. I decide for myself.

Yes, because how can you stop a kid that old from listening? If you forbid it, they'll just rebel. They'll listen at a friend's house and you'll just be making the music all that more attractive if you try to forbid it. They might hopefully grow out of it when they get older. You could talk about negativity in lyrics with a younger kid maybe. You can give your own opinion, of course, but at that age don't try to forbid something like this.

A 16 or 17 year old is no longer a "child" to me. Especially not when it comes to music.

Now, an 8 or 9 year old I'd limit stuff with swearing, or promoting violence.

If I had children I would let them listen to anything they wanted ant any age, I would play for them all the greats like AC/DC, Van Halen. Led Zeppelin, Iron Madian, and anything in between, and let them chose what they want to here. Music should not be censored.

Yes, (I refer to records that have alot of cursing etc) trying to stop them would be like pissing on a forest fire especially in the technological age....... I would speak to them about it though, maybe "take the piss" (make fun of it)........I have one record I like that has cursing

DMX- No Sunshine I heard it as the main song on the movie "Exit Wounds" and it samples Bill Withers "Aint no sunshine" which I like

I think there's a lot of music out there with words and concepts that are really unhealthy for young minds. I tried the reduce the amount of that kind of music in my house.

At that age, yes. My younger brother (who is 23) listens to (as well as writing and performing) death/black metal. He likes music that describes desecrating aborted foetuses, cannibalism, suicide, and so forth. However, he's a sweet and sensitive young man who uses his music to vent and to explore the darker side of his personality. He found solace in that style of music while going through a difficult patch in his early teens. I don't think that the music itself has done him any harm at all, and has in fact helped him to express himself and given him the opportunity to have some amazing experiences (like replacing the vocalist of a well-known (to black metal fans) metal group during one of their tours). Yes, he can be troubled at times - but I think his personality and problems are reflected in his music tastes, not caused by them.

I was raising four teens at once, I was lucky to get up in the morning. Knowing what I know now...I'd guard what my children listen to...no hard rock, rap music

If they were younger I would be more likely to edit their choices but at 16 they are gonna do what they want pretty much anyway. You cant be there all the time.
