I thought that that was my outfit for our *first* date (except that I would be wearing underwear or no deal)! Anyway, I would not be comfortable being as bare as you suggest. We are wearing shoes, and that's final. ~Trish |

I really have no preference, so I picked the most practical thing. It doesn't make one bit of difference which date it is. I don't consider clothing to be relevant in a social sense for these casual types of dates. |
| Crayons | posted 25-Aug-2009 11:36pm It seems to me that guys usually wear warmer things than girls, you know? On formal occasions girls might have their shoulders and legs exposed in a dress, but a guy has to wear a suit. So I'm going to say the girl in shorts and the guy in long pants, because I guess we have to keep the ladies cool? I don't know. |

Quite sensible. I have had my share of scratches and scrapes and at least one seriously bloody knee. ~Trish |

Well, shorts are cooler and a lot more comfortable than pants when hiking. However, for me, that is secondary to fashion in such settings. I just think girls look better in shorts. ~Trish |

| Iseult | posted 26-Aug-2009 11:31am I don't exactly know what 65 degrees entails to, but I'd suggest that both parties wear those long pants that can be zipped off and made into shorts. Even if it's a cold day, hiking can raise your body temperature and you would want to control your clothes to give yourself more air. |
| cerealkiller | (reply to Edenhallgirl) posted 26-Aug-2009 12:53pm I said shoes were optional. Cute cat pic. Probably saw me coming. |

You guessed it - that is my anticipated reaction to taking a peek under the kilt you are going to wear on our first date. ~Trish |
| Edenhallgirl | (reply to Iseult) posted 26-Aug-2009 2:10pm Iseult
Can you believe that I had not thought of zip-offs?! Those things are practical, of course. However, they also allow the couple to explore different combinations, depending on their mood. And variety is always good. I could imagine starting off with me in shorts and the guy in longs and then changing places - I zip my pants back on and make the guy take off his. This could be fun. ~Trish |
| Biggles | posted 26-Aug-2009 2:26pm Both wearing trousers seems wise when hiking - temperatures can be a lot lower when you are exposed to the elements at the top of a hill, and covering your legs will reduce the risk of tick bites (and Lyme Disease). |
| Enheduanna | posted 26-Aug-2009 2:28pm I wouldn't care what anyone else wore. For myself, I would probably choose capri pants or long pants--65 is a little cool. |

I usually wear shorts when hiking, though I sometimes find myself wishing I had worn pants. Here in the San Francisco area, we frequently have these fogs that move in from the ocean in the late afternoon. Very scenic but also very chilly. Much of the time, I just put on a sweater and windbreaker. Keeps my body warm, but my legs still get cold. No big deal so long as I keep moving; it only bothers me when I sit still. Brr. ~Trish |
| Biggles | (reply to Edenhallgirl) posted 26-Aug-2009 6:21pm No ticks there then? |
| Edenhallgirl | (reply to Biggles) posted 26-Aug-2009 9:32pm Biggles
(1) Ticks are an occasional worry but not so much to affect what I wear. It's comfort and looks and sometimes the preferences of others that dictate my clothes. (And comfort is not number 1.) (2) I just realized that you are from the UK and now i have to rethink all of my terminology. Bear with me when I say that I do not always wear pants or knickers, but I always wear underwear. ~Trish |

San Francisco = (almost) no bugs. New England in the Fall is not too bad either, as I recall, except at dawn and dusk. Why shorts for both? Comfort? Equity? Other? ~Trish |

I probably should have made that one of the choices. Hiking shorts for me. However, like you, I don't *really* care what the guy wears, though, on a second date, if I *had* to choose, I would probably put the guy in long pants. ~Trish |
| Edenhallgirl | (reply to Zang) posted 29-Aug-2009 11:02pm > Is this the same person who was asking about a date at a country inn?
Guilty. Careful about encouraging me or there might be a *third* date! ~Trish |

I did not include a skirt option because I did not want the list of choices to get too long. Still, I thought about it. (I actually own a hiking skirt myself -khaki, not tweed.) However, I did not think of the combination of girl in skirt and guy in shorts. Are you from the UK? Australia? NZ? ~Trish |
| Gomezy3k | posted 30-Aug-2009 4:16pm Other... Just hiking shoes because this would be a nudist hiking event with the local nudist club so no clothes period (except shoes and socks -to prevent blisters).... |

I say long pants. Shorts don't suit everyone. |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 7-Sep-2009 8:01am Shorts.
65 is rather cool though, so I guess pants. Hoodies, socks, boots? I never wear those anywhere. I prefer hiking and climbing barefoot, and otherwise only wear sandals. |
