| dab | posted 25-Jun-2009 8:20am Yes, I let my wife do it. She says that wearing contact lenses protects her. |
| cloudhugger | posted 25-Jun-2009 9:23am a small fan to blow the fumes to the side rather than up.
Mom always told me do it under water but that seems incredibally impracticle. Putting theonion in one of those manual food processors works, but I don't always want the onions chopped fine like that, so it is espesially handy for the fine chop...no fumes. Taking glasses off, if yuou are still able to see is good. The onion fumes get caught between the glas and the eyes and lingers. |
| cloudhugger | (reply to dab) posted 25-Jun-2009 9:24am That's true. I never had much of a problem when I wore contacts. |
| bill | posted 25-Jun-2009 9:52am (sweet) Vidalia onions don't make me cry.
I still use Bermuda's a lot, though (heartier and more flavor or maybe I just like the purple) and I cry like a baby. I just don't fight it. I let the tears flow; the snot too to be honest. I've heard of tricks (a cube of bread on the end of the knife), but I can't be bothered. |

I don't have a method for it, although not all onions bother me. I think it's worse when they're really fresh. |

| harry | posted 25-Jun-2009 2:36pm I've heard that soaking onions and slicing them in ice water helps.
Then there's Ron Popeil -- the TV infomercial man & his special knives, who claims "the only tears you'll shed are tears of joy! But-wait ----- there's-more..." |
| cerealkiller | posted 25-Jun-2009 2:44pm Use a jar type onion chopper. Or just stand back, wet the onion with water first, get some other schmuck to do it, or don't eat onions. |
| LindaH | posted 25-Jun-2009 8:28pm I need to put my glasses back on!!!!
...chopping onions without teddy bears, indeed. |

Does this actually work? Going to have to try it. Someone else told me to keep my mouth closed while chopping. I can tell you for sure that does not work. |

Yeah, every restaurant manager in every restaurant I ever worked in has told me the same thing. It doesn't work. |

| they | posted 25-Jun-2009 9:48pm Keep them in the fridge or soak them in icewater before chopping. It helps. |
| fbtryrg | posted 25-Jun-2009 9:50pm No coz everytime sum1 has chopped onions, or wen i've dun it myself i did shred tears it was difficult not 2 coz they r so bladey strong.. |
| FordGuy | (reply to cprasky) posted 26-Jun-2009 7:12am Yes it really works. At least for me anyway. |
| jen | posted 26-Jun-2009 10:32am me? touch food? that's just crazy talk. |
| jettles | posted 28-Jun-2009 6:51am no, but my partner tells me that with her older contact lenses that weren't as breathable as her new ones(and not as good for her eyes due to the lack of O2) she never would shed tears. |
| cprasky | (reply to jettles) posted 28-Jun-2009 9:03am Ah, so if I get old, bad-for-your-eyes contacts, I wouldn't have a problem. Well, not with onions anyway.
Actually, Ford Guy's tip worked for me, last night anyway. But I only sliced one onion, wasn't chopping a bunch. I made baked cod. It came out pretty good. |

| Iseult | posted 28-Jun-2009 2:44pm I heard of some, like running cold water while chopping onions, but I never remember to try any. I always forget that onions bother my eyes, and I remember half way through when my eyes are in tears and burning. |
