Telecommunism: Could you be a professional telemarketer?

"Hi, if I could just take a moment of your cell phone minutes to warn you that your car warranty is about to expire..."

Do you have a "grift of gab"? Enough so that you could make a gainful living as a telemarketer?

VotesAnswer
0Yes. In fact, you'd probably recognize my voice - I am a telemarketer.
0I have held this job before with some success. (So yes.)
0Absolutely, all the way. I fantasize about having such a profession.
2Not my idea of a dream job but...sure, why not?
1Yes, but only on a temporary basis.
1I would consider it but it depends on the "scheme" of my calls or what I'm selling.
1Only as a recorded voice.
5Only if it meant that I would starve for not taking the job.
0Only if I worked for The NY Times.
0I really don't know if I'd make it as a telemarketer.
1I have held this job before but I quit/was fired before I collected a check. (So no.)
15I think not.
2I call upon this survey creator to give me a viable option. [OTHER:]

If I really would starve without it, yes. But I would rather do almost anything else.

I think not. This, to me, would be one of the worst jobs in the world.

I can only think of a few jobs worse than being a telemarketer, so I would only do it if it was a choice between that, an even worse job, or starving. I think it would be a miserable way to make a living. It would definitely be a work to live sort of job, but I'm more of a live to work type.

Do you actually say "grift of gab" there? I've never heard that.

Not a chance. I hate talking to anyone I don't know on the phone.

I think not. Deep down I know I suck as a salesman, especially for a something that no one really needs, so just not gonna happen.

Why the New York Times?

"grift" means to scam someone, usually including seducing someone with an offer they cannot afford to lose.

I worked for a grassroots org doing telephone canvasing but I stunk at it.

I have tried it a couple of times with varying degrees of success. I have come to the conclusion that I am not a salesman. I'd do it on a temporary basis if I had to get a job right away.

No, moral reasons aside, I wouldn't make a very good telemarketer (or salesperson) anyway. My personality and brain doesn't have the capacity (call it EQ) to grasp the complex nuenances of human emotions to be able make the arguments that would convince them. [most people don't, which is why they aren't salesmen]. On the flip side, its also harder to convince me.

That's what it means here too, but a grifter is often someone who has the gift of the gab (as do natural salespeople or politicians).

No period. I worked as a Telephone Operator and that was enough for me. I discovered that most people who use phones have the IQ of a doorknob. I would never take a job where I had to call idiots intentionally.

I hate talking to strangers on the phone. I like slamming the phone down hard, when I get those calls. Right now I screen calls, it makes it so much nicer . My message on my answering machine says, "If I know you, leave a message, If I don't (pause) OH Well"

It was a "pun" a play on words. A very clever one at that.

What kind of a phone do you have that you can "slam" it down?
