| bill | posted 30-May-2009 2:13pm it sounds illegal, honestly |
| LindaH | (reply to bill) posted 30-May-2009 4:13pm It's very legal. No structures are allowed on a property line. Gardens are okay as long as they aren't enclosed by a fence. Zig-zagged landscaping criss crossing over a property line is okay too. |
| Iseult | posted 30-May-2009 5:34pm If I had the time to, then quite possible yes. |
| Enheduanna | posted 30-May-2009 5:39pm Definitely. |
| bill | (reply to LindaH) posted 30-May-2009 6:01pm ah |
| RainingFeathers | posted 30-May-2009 6:03pm No, but only because I don't like gardening. I'd gladly let my neighbour use my space, though. (I'd get my yard tended to, and they'd get more veggies or herbs, if they plant that sort of stuff) |
| Galomorro | posted 30-May-2009 8:51pm Yes, and oh if only I DID have a space like that to garden.... |
| LJD | posted 31-May-2009 12:22am Depending on the neighbor... |
| Crayons | posted 31-May-2009 12:46am That sounds fun. I wish I had a neighbor like that. |
| rustygirl50 | posted 31-May-2009 9:59am maybe |
| they | posted 31-May-2009 11:30am I already garden with both neighbors on either side.
There is a mulberry bush growing between the fences on either side of my house. Somehow, I think they feel that they are my bushes. I don't get that. |
| they | (reply to Galomorro) posted 31-May-2009 11:31am Too bad you live across the country, I'd let you garden my space.
Then I wouldn't have to do it. |
| Galomorro | (reply to they) posted 31-May-2009 12:31pm Yeah, I so envy people who have real yards! |
| they | (reply to Galomorro) posted 31-May-2009 1:00pm For years, I had this junky weed bush growing by my driveway that would not die. Last year, I finally got out there and dug/chopped out its heart. We laid retaining wall blocks in an oval shape on top of where the bush was and filled it with dirt. And abandoned it.
This year, the grass in it was so tall, it was starting to look ornamental. I went out there yesterday and dug it all out, filled in the bed with more doo-doo... and Mary and I planted it. It was hard work, but very enjoyable... and the finished product is satisfying to look at. So I can see why you'd like it. But when your yard is a jungle like mine, taming it can be daunting. |
| Galomorro | (reply to they) posted 31-May-2009 1:31pm I would kill to own a jungle! I'd get a fig tree, dwarf citrus, and a blueberry bush. |
| they | (reply to Galomorro) posted 31-May-2009 2:35pm I like having plants and trees that bear fruit and nuts to attract critters. I have a raspberry bush, an oak tree, and a black walnut hangs over the back hill. I'd love to get a buckeye and some apple trees.
I plan to cover the back hill, which is impossible to mow, in periwinkle. |
| Galomorro | (reply to they) posted 31-May-2009 4:13pm Sounds beautiful! |
| Biggles | posted 31-May-2009 7:19pm I'm a bit confused - surely there's either a garden there already, or not? And if not, I'm imagining it's concreted over or something, so it would be tricky to start growing anything - unless it's going to be a container garden? If there's a garden already there, on both sides of the property line, then it could well be fun to combine them together and work with my neighbour. |
| Biggles | (reply to Galomorro) posted 31-May-2009 7:24pm I have a fig tree (called Prometheus |
| Galomorro | (reply to Biggles) posted 31-May-2009 10:32pm Oh cool! I had one once but it died. It was in a sunny south window but it still died. We're not allowed to put things on the fire escape - it's against the law because the area needs to be kept clear in case of fire. The only things I have are a few things hanging over the rails and behind the ladder where they're not in the way of anyone walking on the fire escape. So I can't have a potted tree out there. Maybe I should try again in the kitchen where the other one was. There's a tree growing here now but am not sure what it is-some sort of citrus I think-maybe a lemon, lime, orange or kumquat seed I tossed down. I hate to toss seeds out. They do grow very well (figs), here but they're in yards. Lemons grow really well here too. |
| Biggles | (reply to Galomorro) posted 1-Jun-2009 2:07pm I have a miniature orange tree (Hercules) and a lemon tree (Theophrastus) but they don't do brilliantly in the English climate. I have had some little oranges, which are very sour but great for cooking with (I make orange meringue pie) but no lemons yet - and neither tree is looking in great condition at the moment. If I ever have a conservatory, I will definitely turn it into an orangery (and other citrus plants). |
| cerealkiller | posted 1-Jun-2009 3:00pm All houses here have totally fenced yards and neighbors generally don't even talk to each other let alone garden together. |
| Galomorro | (reply to Biggles) posted 1-Jun-2009 3:24pm I'd love to taste that pie!! |
| Gomezy3k | posted 2-Jun-2009 2:58pm No because I DO NOT get along with my neighbor or anyone else... I hate my neighbors and plot their demise daily... |
| cloudhugger | posted 8-Jun-2009 2:25am Yes. I don't know my neihbors, but I'd go for it. |
| coffee5437 | posted 25-Jun-2009 8:51pm what is there to think about? why not? |
