| cprasky | posted 29-May-2009 9:00am My dog Sally barks whenever anyone in the household hugs anyone else. Our cat, Asher, likes to attack your legs as you go up the stairs. |
| bill | posted 29-May-2009 9:16am where to begin? ... right at this very second, Pekoe (our male cat) is meowing at me. He sits next to my keyboard and meows at me. He doesn't really want or need anything, except perhaps attention. But, I've given him some already. Probably, he's bored because he can't go outside very well because it's raining today (and this is the 3rd day of rain). He will go out a little, but then wants to come back in, with muddy paws, walking all over my stuff... He also does this meowing thing at 5am sometimes, though today he let me sleep until 7am.
Sweetie, our female cat (Pekoe's sister) pees in various places (rugs, doormats, against certain walls, on the staircase, by the tub, etc). It has gotten bad enough that we've isolated her in the basement. We use the basement a fair bit, so it's not as bad as it sounds. Also, Pekoe and Sweetie hate each other and will fight if they get close. So, separating them has been helpful too (much less stress trying to break up fights and prevent damage to the house from things getting knocked over, etc.) Sweetie still pees on stuff in the basement. She just peed on one of my dumbbells Tuesday (I use it a few times a week when I do a workout). *sigh* So, I hastily constructed a raised table to put the dumbbells on out of 2 cinder blocks and a piece of wood. I have hard plastic sheets covering the treadmill now too, after she started peeing on that. |
| paulyw | posted 29-May-2009 10:13am Yes my cat, he will at times jump on my bed meow non-stop when he is hungry and want something to eat early in the morning. |
| Enheduanna | posted 29-May-2009 12:20pm Many of the things that my cats do annoy my SO (demanding attention, putting their butts in his face, throwing up hairballs), although they annoy me less. One of them has taken to trying to get out the front door recently. And the other one always wants to be pet if I'm in bed and awake, which can get a little old. She can't sit still when you're petting her, either, which makes it a little frustrating. I'm also a little allergic to that one, which I think makes it a little more annoying to deal with her. |
| LJD | posted 29-May-2009 3:46pm We have a Beagle, he's not a watch dog. All he barks at or aggressive to is the possums on electrical lines. When the pool man, or utility man comes in the yard, many times just lies down and watches them. |

| cprasky | (reply to bill) posted 29-May-2009 8:22pm You work out bill? I tried lifting weights once, but they're so heavy.... |
| bill | (reply to cprasky) posted 30-May-2009 7:20am Yes, but otherwise I barely move at all (except to go get some food to eat). So, it all kind of balances out. |

We had one given to us and he kept climbing the fence to escape, so we chained him up in the fenced in yard and he still escaped. |
| LJD | (reply to labjog) posted 30-May-2009 10:59am Our Beagle has tried to escape in to the park behind our house, and did go under the fence to our neighbor's yard. My husband had to make a barrier between our neighbor's house and ours by concrete below the fence, There is a concrete barrier around most of the other yard because of our pool. One little area where there is grass by the park, he had to make a barrier too. |
| Galomorro | posted 30-May-2009 11:35am No pets now. My dog used to bark whenever I would leave but that was my fault for not training him properly. |

| meowry | posted 31-May-2009 12:58am I have a number of pets. But the only ones who annoy me are the guinea pigs that make noise and ruin my sleep. I am never having children! |
| they | posted 31-May-2009 11:47am Which pet? I have to start work in 15 minutes... so I'll try to get through this. Hamilton: She likes to stick her claws in leather and POP them straight out. It must be very enjoyable, but because of it, I can't have anything leather. My boots are always in danger. She also will scratch something to get my attention. Sybal: Begging for canned food, acting like he's starving when the feeder is half full, getting underfoot, overeating and puking up wet food piles. Lately, sneezing in my face. Molly: Getting underfoot on your way to the bathroom. She always has to be in there with you and she can sense from anywhere in the house that you need to pee. It's like a race. She wants to be RIGHT in front of you on the floor the whole time you are walking into the bathroom. Then she hangs out with you while you pee. She's also very needing of affection, but hesitant to receive it. Joon: Just in your face all the time. She's very loving. If she lays anywhere near you, she's not happy unless at least one paw is stretched out and touching you... and she would prefer to be around your neck. Rusty: Rusty pees on stuff if you leave it on the floor. Patches: Oh how do I count the ways? She holds her poop until it hurts to crap. And then she'll do it anywhere. Her bed always smells like ass because of it, so I'm constantly washing dog beds. I have to mop daily because she squats and pees if you don't let her out every two hours. I work and sleep, so this is difficult. She's mostly blind, so there are problems related to that. Also, she is scared of everything. Hey, you asked. I almost clocked into work late because you made me rant about the pets. |
| they | (reply to bill) posted 31-May-2009 11:51am Why do you think she does it?
Gregs started squatting and peeing everywhere at one point. It even got so bad that he would do it in front of us. It turned out he had a urinary infection, and they thought maybe kidney stones too. Have you had her checked? Just a thought. If you can convince her to pee in an empty litter box, you can get some piss easy enough to have tested. Or maybe she's just being a little butt-hole? |
| bill | (reply to they) posted 31-May-2009 12:26pm Yeah, one of the first things we checked was a urinary infection (took her to the vet, etc.). She gets yearly vet health checks, she's healthy.
We have had various theories over the years. Sometimes, we'll believe one for a while until she does something out of pattern. Jen seems to believe in these theories more than me. I've mostly given up. I think it's more or less random. Often the theories are as simple as "she likes to pee on X". So, we remove X and she doesn't seem to pee in a bad place for a while, and we think it's resolved. Then, we find out where she has been peeing for 2 weeks and we want to murder her. I wouldn't say she's an butt-hole. She does seem to be psychologically unique, compared to other cats I've known. Interacting with her is odd. She likes certain things and not others and has moods. She can be very affectionate and happy at times. She has peed at times when she seemed very happy. But, also, when she seemed pissed off or ignored by us perhaps. Her fighting with her brother Pekoe is likely a trigger, though not always. It just seems like a constant stress and she often makes a big fuss (hissing, growling, etc.) Though, she also instigates trouble (used to attack Pekoe while he slept), so she's not just a victim (though he's 2-3 times her size, so it's easy to see it that way). He will go after her very agressively at times too. We thought having them separated might improve her peeing and it may have somewhat, but she still does it. So, maybe that's more wishful thinking. |
| they | (reply to bill) posted 31-May-2009 12:57pm How old are they now?
Our cat Molly hated Gregs being around. She would pee on stuff because she hated him. At least that's all I could figure. |
| bill | (reply to they) posted 31-May-2009 1:42pm 11 years old or so. There were a few incidents in the past, but in the last few years it has become frequent. |
| cerealkiller | posted 1-Jun-2009 3:04pm The dog rubs her back end back and forth on the couch trying to reach an itch. One of the cats chews on my fingers when I'm asleep and wakes me up. Another butts my hand with his head when I'm trying to eat dinner. |

It's a prescription sedative that calms them since anxiety is a major reason they spray. I get it from a cat pharmacy online. |
| bill | (reply to cerealkiller) posted 1-Jun-2009 3:17pm Thanks, I'll check it out... I can't say I'm excited about giving my cat psych drugs, but maybe we're at a point where we should consider it. |

| ihatespiders | posted 4-Jun-2009 11:26pm My cat likes to rip open the cat food bag, even if the food bowl is full of cat food. So I keep cat food in a plastic container. She likes to walk on my keyboard. |
| bill | (reply to cerealkiller) posted 7-Jun-2009 8:27am Your suggestion came at a good time. My wife just took our cats to the vet and she asked about amitriptyline. We ended up getting a version that we can rub on the inside ear of the cat. We just started it yesterday. I guess it will take weeks to kick in and we may need to up the dose over time until it's effective. But, we're giving it a shot and the cat didn't mind the ear application. So, we're hopeful.
We have trouble getting either of our cats to swallow pills, so the ear thing was appealing. Do you use the pill? do you mix it with food or something? The vet also talked about prozac, but said it's potentially harsher on the cat's liver. So, we opted for the amitriptyline. Anyway, thanks for the advice. |
| cloudhugger | posted 8-Jun-2009 2:44am Yes. The butt licking makes me want to scream. I had a big old black and tan hound dog tht would lick his privates and one time I yelled at him "Go do that in the bathroom!" And he got up, walked into the bathroom and continues to do his thing. It was too funny.
Our little dog now chews the hair in between his toes. That isnot a good thing, but there isn't much we can do about it. |

Reminds of that scene from The Long Kiss Goodnight, when Brian Cox asks the old lady to take her dog away from the breakfast table. "What's wrong with the dog?" she asks. He replies, "He has been licking his ass for the past three hours. I submit to you that there is nothing there worth more than an hour's attention and whatever it is that he is attempting to dislodge is either gone for good or there to stay. Wouldn't you agree?" |

So, we > opted for the amitriptyline. > > Anyway, thanks for the advice. Whenever possible we get things in liquid form, but not everything comes as a liquid. When we give pills we use "pill pockets". We get them at the pet store and they're made by "Greenies". They are a soft treat that you can put a pill into and shove it in their mouth. The trick is to get the pill far back enough in their mouth so they don't spit it back out. |
| bill | (reply to cerealkiller) posted 8-Jun-2009 5:25pm thanks |
| cerealkiller | (reply to bill) posted 8-Jun-2009 5:32pm Worst thing is having a cat who will tear you apart before giving it medicine in any form. I have one like that. I can't give her meds without coming away bleeding. And that is if I can catch her. If I manage to catch her the first thing she does is piss on my pants, claw me, hissing away. I have to wait until she opens her mouth to hiss then throw the pill into her mouth.
Sad thing is she is suffering from some kind of nasty bacterial thing in her head that is causing the bridge area of her head to swell up and is actually eating away the bones. It is so sporadic that I can get medications in her that she is needlessly likely to die from this just for being so stubborn and violent. Almost as hard is holding a cat still while you're trying to give them fluids Sub-Q under the skin or injections. I have one I give vitamin B-12 injections to. The stuff is supposed to burn going in so I don't blame her for trying to get away. |
| bill | (reply to cerealkiller) posted 8-Jun-2009 5:45pm Yikes, that's rough. I'm sorry about your sick cat.
The one we have trouble with is the worm pill for our large male cat. He just got the Vet's assistant good last week when they tried to give him the pill. We had trouble last year, so we asked them to do it. They did worse than us. He spit the pill out twice, scratched 2 people (the other was my wife). And, he foams at the mouth, dripping on the floor. He was in a bad mood the rest of the day too. I feel so bad about it. I know it's what it best for them, but they clearly get affected by it (avoid us for hours, cringe at being touched for a while too). I actually get b12 shots myself, sub-q and they aren't that bad. Once in a while it stings (hits a nerve?), but usually it doesn't hurt at all. Our cats seem to take shots at the vet fairly well. I think they are sore afterwards though. |
| cerealkiller | (reply to bill) posted 8-Jun-2009 5:57pm Some of mine will foam at the mouth. And then others will take anything without complaint. Hah, we had one like yours but worse. Normally peaceful, a trip to the vet transforms him into a crazed maniac. last time he bit the vet which required stitches, flew all over the room, knocking everything off the shelves and creating a total disaster area. |
