| cerealkiller | posted 20-May-2009 11:27pm Sometimes but it's of course a 50/50 guess. Orange tabbies are males 99% of the time but I've had a female orange tabby.
We had 5 kittens last fall I took care of until they went to the rescue for adoption. For some reason I never bothered checking the gender. My guess by looks and personality 4 of the five were female and 1 a male. I was totally wrong. The 4 I thought were females were males and the last one was a female. |
| bill | posted 21-May-2009 6:40am Both of our current cats tend to walk around with their tails up (that's normal, right?) Anyway, you can tell without needing to lift because it's already lifted. Though, maybe that's not what you meant. |
| they | posted 21-May-2009 7:22am Yes.
Especially if it's a Tortie or a Calico. But, like MOST humans.... you can tell with a glance. |
| Irene007 | (reply to bill) posted 21-May-2009 7:35am Nope! Some cats have small balls or no balls at all along with long hair so even if the tail is up; you have to do a little searching... |

> > Especially if it's a Tortie or a Calico. > > But, like MOST humans.... you can tell with a glance. Yep! Like MOST humans! I asked this because a little cat adopted ME last week. I had a bunch of people over and they were referring to it as HE when I kept calling it HER. When I realized that, I lifted the tail to confirm my guess and she is a SHE! I never really questioned it from the moment I saw her; her look and her demeanor screamed SHE.... |

| bill | (reply to Irene007) posted 21-May-2009 7:44am Our cats have short hair, so you can see things. Though, our male is neutered, so what you see are sad, deflated sacks. |
| bill | (reply to Irene007) posted 21-May-2009 7:46am A college roommate I had once kept a rat. It's was clearly male. Oh my God. |

| they | (reply to Irene007) posted 21-May-2009 8:45am See? Cats have very feminine or masculine mannerisms. I've always wondered how people always guess gender wrong in cats. To me, it's very obvious. I'm glad you took her in. That makes you AWESOME in my book |
| Irene007 | (reply to bill) posted 21-May-2009 9:48am Shh! Copycat might hear you! He hasn't gotten over it yet... |

| Irene007 | (reply to they) posted 21-May-2009 9:51am She's so sweet - I want to give Oreo away (I just had him neutered and he's had all his shots $$$) but I don't care for his personality and apparently, neither does Copycat. He keeps cat swearing at him lately but he seems to tolerate the female... |
| bill | (reply to Irene007) posted 21-May-2009 10:56am There's always neuticals! |
| Enheduanna | posted 21-May-2009 11:54am Does asking the owner count? |
| FauxLo | posted 21-May-2009 2:50pm I assume all cats are girls until I see their balls. |
| Irene007 | (reply to bill) posted 21-May-2009 2:53pm Good Lord! Neuticles allows your pet to retain his natural look, self esteem and aids in the trauma associated with neutering. WTF?!? I think that would stem from the owner's issues.... |

| JessicaWoman99 | posted 21-May-2009 2:54pm No what sex is that cat |

Does that work with Leos too? If a guy says he's born in August, should I ask to see his balls? |

| Galomorro | posted 21-May-2009 3:26pm No. When I used to have cats, I'd ask the vet when I took the kitten in to have it neutered or spayed. |

Like my mary's? |
| southernyankee | posted 21-May-2009 9:22pm No.
Neither can I do it for a dog. |
| Irene007 | (reply to cloudhugger) posted 22-May-2009 9:23am No, not at all. So sweet (actually, quite desperate when she first arrived - starved and drooling!), she wormed her way into my heart. I tried to stay cold and asked the people present if they wanted a cat but now I want to give Oreo away and keep her! She's so sweet! Oreo's an ass... |
| dpurdy33 | posted 22-May-2009 11:13am No!! Why would I want to? |
| Biggles | posted 22-May-2009 9:59pm Maybe if it was an obviously pregnant female, or an obviously aroused male... |

What did you find? |
| cprasky | posted 29-May-2009 8:33am Yeah, sometimes with short-haired cats. Persians can be problematic. |
| cprasky | (reply to southernyankee) posted 29-May-2009 8:40am > No.

aaaand, thanks to google, now I can. With the tail up, I mean.
Oh wait, I know. You can tell if they're mating.. the male is probably going to be on top.
