I was almost in a war with the company I worked at. My boyfriend and I were thisclose to assuming the lock and load position. No crap. |
| Matty | posted 14-May-2009 7:39am Yup, 3-4 times, depending on how one defines a war. Bosnia, Afghanistan, Philippines, and Iraq. |

| dab | (reply to Maarten) posted 14-May-2009 8:46am Really? For no reason at all? I thought you liked your country, was even proud of it. If it was invaded again, you wouldn't defend it? |

| Matty | (reply to dab) posted 14-May-2009 9:25pm I f Maarten is a pacifist, I can respect and understand that; it's probably closer to what Christ wanted anyway.
The problem is that Europe in general counts our troops stationed there as part of their national defense plan. |
| dab | (reply to Matty) posted 15-May-2009 8:10am I vacillate on my opinion of pacifism. Partly I respect the position (pacifists have taken a difficult and admirable stance) and partly I think it's just really, fudging stupid.
However, I didn't read from Maarten's comment that he was a pacifist. I just read that he was aghast at the idea of defending his country at all. Previously I'd gotten the impression that he was, in fact, inordinately proud of his country so I was surprised. |
| Matty | (reply to dab) posted 15-May-2009 8:41am Hmmm, I would say I pretty much concur with your ideas of pacifism. While I can admire it, I also find it to be a somewhat arrogant view as so many people have died to preserve one's right to be a pacifist.
I didn't read a declaration of pacifism in Maarten's statement either; I just couldn't have imagined any other reason for him making it. Perhaps that was just simply an error on my part. Maybe he's just a pussy; I don't know, but I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he is a pacifist. |
| dab | (reply to Matty) posted 15-May-2009 9:12am I once read a comment from Gandhi about how pacifism worked in his case because he used it against the British. If his enemy had been Genghis Kahn for example, it wouldn't have worked and he would have chosen a different path. I gained a great deal of respect for the man from that. |
| Matty | (reply to dab) posted 15-May-2009 10:18am Hmmmph, appropriately applied pacifism, I can't say I had ever heard about that before. Thanks for that. |
| LJD | posted 15-May-2009 1:24pm I sicken at the thought of war, and of the precious boys we've lost over the years...I ache.... |
