White magic: The magician tells you to get on stage, and then suddenly your watch disappears. The crowd laughs. Then he says "is this your watch" and gives it back to you. The audience laughs.

Black magic: The magician tells you to get on stage, and then suddenly your watch disappears. The crowd laughs. Then he says "is this your watch" and gives it back to you. The audience laughs. You go back to sit down, only to latter discover that its not really your watch, but a cheap knock off. And that your wallet is missing.

From my reading it seems that 'black magic' usually depends on help from demons or some other entity that is universally recognized as evil. Also it is generally a self-serving or selfish form of magic, used in order to obtain wealth for oneself, for example. White magic is generally considered a healing force, does not depend on help from demonic agencies and is never used to serve the interests of the practitioner.

In fiction they seem to have reasonably different definitions.
