| FauxLo | posted 18-Feb-2009 7:28pm I don't think they're worth what they get paid, but it's not for anyone to say that they get paid too much, in my opinion. |
| Enheduanna | posted 18-Feb-2009 7:34pm I think they get paid too much. I understand that the nature of their careers means that they often won't be able to work in that career as long as other people, but I'm not very sympathetic. Other people work just as hard and find other jobs when one ends. Athletes should have to do the same. If they're injured and can't work anymore, they can have disability insurance, just like other people do, too. |
| cerealkiller | posted 18-Feb-2009 7:38pm same survey |
| LindaH | posted 18-Feb-2009 7:42pm Athletes are in a sense, entertainers. As long as a person can do something that millions of people are willing to pay to watch, they deserve the money that it brings them. Sports, comedy, acting, music, magic shows, stupid stunts... if people will buy it, people will make money from it. |
| dab | posted 18-Feb-2009 8:06pm Other. Their employers are willing to pay that much and they're willing to work for that much. Good work if you can get it but it's a life-limited career so they need to be careful not to blow their money and end up with nothing but a busted up body. |
| JessicaWoman99 | posted 18-Feb-2009 8:26pm No we know where all the money is going to fill their pockets and why there is a recession |
| Biggles | posted 18-Feb-2009 9:11pm I don't. |
| Galomorro | posted 18-Feb-2009 9:26pm They get paid far too much. |
| llamamama | posted 18-Feb-2009 9:41pm It kind of upsets me. And by kind of, I mean only when I'm compelled to answer a question like this. That and when I spend 20 minutes answering a survey about sports..when I watch absolutely no sports..but the lady was nice and just doing her job..to the letter!! That's when I think pro athletes are ridiculous! |
| Iseult | posted 18-Feb-2009 10:17pm I wish I was getting paid as much as they are. |
| Joanne | posted 18-Feb-2009 11:17pm Ridiculous sum of money. Spoils them, spoils the games. |
| Bilateralkitty | posted 19-Feb-2009 12:38am The sad fact is we pay their salaries via high cable TV bills, product advertisments and marketing. This is why I refuse to have Cable or Sat TV and use over the air free analog and soon DTV. I refuse to pay television royalities to these bastards. |
| southernyankee | posted 19-Feb-2009 12:46am I don't think that much. They work their asses off and are talented. Thats just how capitalism works. |
| gambler | posted 19-Feb-2009 6:59am They deserve every penny...to a point, I think Football players earn the right amount the Avg career is 5yrs unless your a Qtr back...the damge on your body here is huge...I saw OJ simpson awhile back and he walks like a cripple, knees are completely shot.
Michael Jordan when he played for the Bulls bought in so much revenue for the city of Chicago? |
| bill | posted 19-Feb-2009 7:08am Yes, as do many other undeserving people (especially those evil CEOs!). We should create a worldwide government ministry of salaries that regulates all salaries everywhere, so that they are always fair and never too high! |
| LindaH | posted 19-Feb-2009 10:49am What about those lottery winners getting paid too much?
|
| Matty | posted 19-Feb-2009 12:01pm I think it's ridiculous, but better the athletes than the corps that own the teams. |
| icurok | posted 19-Feb-2009 12:46pm Most professional athletes don't get paid millions of dollars. The ones that do are the ones who people are most prepared to pay money to see, because in a way professional sport is part of the entertainment industry.
Thousands of people watch these athletes do what they do and the money is paid to them as a reward for attracting the audience. |
| they | posted 19-Feb-2009 3:58pm I think, like celebrities that get paid that kind of money, they should quit whining about being placed under a microscope. This is what you signed up for ya big whiny baby! |
| bill | (reply to they) posted 19-Feb-2009 4:28pm In the next year, we might see 1 in 4 people out of work, given the economic problems. You'll just be glad you even have a job. ...just where the evil CEOs want you! |
| they | (reply to bill) posted 19-Feb-2009 5:30pm I'm pretty sick of being reminded how l lucky I am. Sure, I'm luckier than those poor bastards.. but I'm still getting ass raped.
Even during the announcement, they told us how lucky we were to have a job today... even if they couldn't guarantee one later. |
| bill | (reply to they) posted 19-Feb-2009 6:23pm But, you know, YOU ARE REALLY REALLY LUCKY
REALLY ...lucky! |
| they | (reply to bill) posted 19-Feb-2009 7:53pm Today I sent an IM to a friend while I was listening to the announcement on a conference call. I told my friend something that was said to us in quotes.... I quoted her exactly, only I capitalized the ironic part. By the end of the day, the IM police had reported to my supervisor that I was badmouthing the supervisor that made the announcement... with capitalization, apparently. Anyway, I got a friendly reminder that I'm being watched. |
| cloudhugger | posted 20-Feb-2009 12:45am I don't know. Thier bodies are trashed for the rest of their life, they have to pay for therapy. They have to pay bodyguards and managers, I probably have more cash in my pockets than they do. |
| bill | (reply to they) posted 20-Feb-2009 6:59am you need to develop codewords for IM... I bet you already have, actually
necessity is the jerk of invention |
| they | (reply to bill) posted 21-Feb-2009 2:58am Sometimes I really hate my job. We're just there to make the place run smoothly. I don't understand why people want to complicate things by creating drama. There is a 75% chance that the person who turned me in knows me and even smiles and says hi when they see me. Just a dog with nothing better to do. |
| jettles | posted 21-Feb-2009 6:38am if someone is willing to pay them the money then that is how much they are worth to that person or team! obviously we as the public are not boycotting these sports on tv or in person to send the message that they are not worth it so until we do............. the pay continues!!! |
| LindaH | (reply to they) posted 21-Feb-2009 4:26pm That's pretty much why people turn others in over minor petty things. To create drama. |
| they | (reply to LindaH) posted 21-Feb-2009 4:34pm butt-holes They should wait to turn me in when I'm really being a bad employee. This was not one of those times. |
| JohnCD | posted 21-Feb-2009 11:45pm I enjoy watching professional sports (football, baseball, and hockey), but I do think that some of them are way overpaid. |
| Colleentg | posted 27-Feb-2009 12:51am The problem lies with the advertisers paying millions more to support broadcasting of it. |
| Pomeranian | posted 28-Feb-2009 12:57am I am in the minority but correct opinion that professional athletes are paid fairly for a private service that everybody involved, both spectator and performer, engage in voluntarily. |
