I have a one-year contract. I feel very secure that it won't be canceled, and I actually feel pretty secure that it would be renewed for at least another year if I wanted. However, I don't want to renew, and I feel very insecure about my prospects for finding another job after this one.

secure, i think. but you can never be sure of course. i am a physician assistant, so i work in the medical field, somewhat safe. i work in probably the biggest money making units in our hospital if not in the top two............. somewhat safe. our unit is always full and i am not the worst employee we have............. somewhat safe. but then who knows what will happen!

Mostly secure but not all the time. The company is doing very well and hiring. But there are times when I don't have anything to do for 2-3 months at a time. Then I get nervous that they'll lay me off.

Other. I do not work. Had to retire early because temping and being on unemployment did not pay the rent and bills. I felt fairly secure until the late '90s, then a lot of people got downsized in 1998 and I was one of 'em, and I couldn't find a permanent job. The reason for the downsizing was due to a merger between 2 companies and around that time everyone was at each other's throat - I can certainly understand how a lot of people are feeling right now with all the recent layoffs and fear and rumors of same.

I don't know what to think.
I don't have performance concerns, if that's the question.

Regarding security of the company and my position, I work at a tier 1 supplier to the big 3 auto makers. We have a mandatory 1 week layoff in Jan. Non-exempts have a 2 week layoff.

My company tends to run really lean. The up side is we have few layoffs. The down side is we're all overworked. Still, I'm very grateful.

Why would you not want to renew your contract, if you're future prospects don't seem good?

Secure, shmecure. I was hired on a one year contract for a maternity leave and unfortunately the woman's maternal instinct wasn't strong enough to keep her home so I'm finished as of Dec24th (noon) although I am paid to Jan 2nd. After that I'm unemployed in this climate which is wonderful. If you know anyone in my neck of the woods that needs someone who's best skills aren't marketable, is not shy, can figure out how to get along with absolutely anyone, has a good sense of humour and a lot of integrity give me a call. You know with those things going for me I'll never find another job.
