| Melf | posted 3-Nov-2008 5:22pm 1ps, 2ps, and 5ps I keep in a cheap champagne flute I was given at a get together for a friend's 18th. There really isn't much money there (I very much doubt it's even a quid) but it looks better than an old coffee jar. Other change I keep in my purse for the bus. I've never bought anything with my card, I far prefer using cash. |
| LindaH | posted 3-Nov-2008 5:25pm Keep it around, leave it in piles. It accumulates everywhere. |
| LJD | posted 3-Nov-2008 5:37pm I keep mine in a little purse in my purse. |
| Galomorro | posted 3-Nov-2008 6:23pm Use it. I need all the change I can get. Even pennies help when one has tax on non-grocery items. |
| cantilever | posted 3-Nov-2008 7:35pm Usually, that's what I buy newspapers with |
| dab | posted 3-Nov-2008 10:20pm spend it |
| llamamama | posted 3-Nov-2008 11:23pm I glue it together to make an animal..I'm currently working on a rhino. |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 4-Nov-2008 2:07am Keep it in a film cannister and spend it on purchases. I never end up with more than fits in the film cannister, and purchase additional rolls quarters for laundry, which on occasion also get spent on some milk at the corner market. |
| bill | posted 4-Nov-2008 5:01am I keep some in the door of my car, for tolls and change when out shopping. Also, some in a small bowl in the kitchen. I use it most often when I go to the post office to send a package. I will put it in charity things too. |
| Enheduanna | posted 4-Nov-2008 7:35am Coins go in the coin pocket of my wallet and get spent. I'm pretty good about using them up. Sometimes I take quarters out and add them to the stash for laundry. |
| judgescratch | posted 4-Nov-2008 9:38am Use it/spend it. |
| Matty | posted 4-Nov-2008 1:15pm I always give my change to poor people; it's so small a sacrifice.
Good survey |
| cerealkiller | posted 4-Nov-2008 1:30pm Throw it in a bowl every night. When the bowl gets full I put it in a bag, take it to the grocery store and put it in their coin machine to get cash. The machine gets 10%. I usually get $25-$30 when I go every couple months.
Change I get from drive-thrus in the car gets put in the dash compartment by the ashtray and is used for tips at Starbucks since my wife requires a latte daily. |
| cloudhugger | posted 4-Nov-2008 6:47pm Throw it in a big tin and watch it grow. I've never saved my change before, I don't know what or when I will do anything with it. I would like to spread it all over the table first and see if there are any coins that are worth more than face value. |
| Joanne | posted 5-Nov-2008 12:30am I've done all of the above over the years, but now I'm doing something I didn't add to the list: let the grandkids play with it . . . tiddlywinks, sort by years and denominations, shine and polish it, and finally, take it home with them. |
| JessicaWoman99 | posted 5-Nov-2008 6:47am Keep all my spare change for that day that comes |
| Jody | posted 5-Nov-2008 10:08am I usually spend it like real money (pay with exact change). |
| Cain | posted 5-Nov-2008 10:30am It all goes in my daughter's piggy bank, which then gets taken to the bank once a month or so. |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to Joanne) posted 5-Nov-2008 10:57pm It's strange that spending it before it accumulates was not even one of your options. I take it you never pay with exact change.
These days I find register clerks don't even know how to make change. If I pay $1.75 for a $1.57 item, and they don't have an electronic register, I have to do the math for them. Unfortunately I can't use the change making method with their coins, +3¢ = 1.60, +.10=1.70, +.05=$1.75, and have to resort to math in my head instead. I usually confound things a step further though, for instance paying $2.07 for a $1.57 item so I can get some laundry quarters back. |
| lily333 | posted 6-Nov-2008 12:45am I put it in a jar on my dresser and cash it in when it gets full. The last time I got $800.00. It took a long time though and was very heavy bringing it into the bank. |
| docgbrown | posted 6-Nov-2008 3:08am Car gets drive-through change for same use. Sons get quarters for school. Wife gets change that makes it home. |
| Kristal_Rose | (reply to lily333) posted 6-Nov-2008 3:15am Dang, that's a lot.
I knew an asian family who gradually put away trunks of rolled pennies. The older ones would be worth far more in copper, if melting them were legal. The ones from the last two decades though are filled with zinc, and can practically be set on fire with a lighter. |
| Nitroeddy | posted 9-Nov-2008 8:22am I throw it in a container on my dresser and use what's left everytime I go out. I always try to keep at least a dollar's worth of change in my pocket, include 5 pennies. That way I always have enough spare change when I purchase something that I don't have to break a bill. |
| Gomezy3k | posted 9-Nov-2008 9:15am Keep it and when I get a lot cash it in. I used to go to the Casino's but the jerks went to the cash machines which charge you to use them. SO now I bite the bullet and use them. I usually get between 200 to 400 bucks at a time.... |
| risingroad | posted 9-Nov-2008 1:53pm Give out as tips and usually a 20% tip. |
| Lahdee | posted 9-Nov-2008 7:30pm we have a change can |
| Bilateralkitty | posted 11-Nov-2008 12:28am I get one of those plastic water bottles every year from the office. an empty one. It sits alongside the couch all year long. Every year our tradition is to dump it out on the carpet on new year's eve around 8:00 and sit in a circle on the floor and seperate the pennies/nickels/dimes/quarters and the day after New year's take the coins to the machine at the bank that gives you cash for the coins. It's usually several hundred dollars worth. We then spend that money on family events like amusment park trips, miniature golf, beach trips etc. |
| JohnCD | posted 12-Nov-2008 8:12pm I save most of my change in a large container. I recently counted all my change after saving for over four years and it amounted to over $625. I rolled up all the coins and deposited it all in one of my savings accounts. It’s amazing how much it can add up to; I had a lot more than I thought. |
| they | posted 13-Nov-2008 11:00pm I don't have much because I mostly use my debit card.
What change we have gets scrounged for lunch money some mornings. Usually, I just write a check for that though. |
| Pomeranian | posted 13-Nov-2008 11:49pm I give it to street people or put it in tip jars. |
| rocky221 | posted 14-Nov-2008 7:12pm I put it in my car and then when I go thru a drive-thru for fast food, I pay with it and get rid of all of it. It's like your getting a free-meal. |
| Biggles | posted 21-Jan-2009 6:56pm I have a bottle of coppers in my room. I also save 5ps to top up the money I have to print at the university library. |
