Do you agree that some breeds of dogs should be outlawed?

A couple cities have banned pit-bulls and pit-bull-like dogs. Other cities have strict regulations regarding them (ie muzzles). Elsewhere, breeding them is against the law.

Yes. There are too many people who are irresponsible pet owners. It's puts the general public into harms way.

I'm not sure. It seems like pit bulls are really pretty dangerous. I remember in the last year or two, a family's pit bull killed their little boy in San Francisco. It's not the first time I've heard of such a story. And of course, the owners are always so surprised, because their gentle dog never showed the slightest sign of blah blah blah. As though the slavering fangs and tightly-hinged jaw weren't enough of a sign. So I think it's stupid for people to have them, and I certainly think making sure they're leashed and muzzled if they're out in public is a good idea. I always feel very uncomfortable when I walk past a pit bull that's not muzzled. But I'm not sure I would go so far as to say they should be banned completely. If people want to take the risk of having one, then maybe that should be left up to them. I don't know.

no, i really don't think that the dog breed is the problem or the dog at all............ it is the breeding, treatment and owners that are the problem!

No, dogs behave how they are trained. People who have mean dogs from being trained how to fight should spend 30 days in the hoosegow to teach them a lesson. Yeah, stupid people are far more dangerous than any dog

No. But then I don't know much about this. Are the dogs really vicious and unpredictable no matter what, or can they be trained properly when pups so as to fit in with owners like other dogs do?

I don't know that aggressive breeds of dogs should necessarily be banned. I'm far more against overbred dogs (overbred breeds that are inbred to the point of physical damage).

No no no no no.

That is ridiculous. A pit bull is born just like any other dog, and just like any other dog, it's upbringing is what determines the behavior. While studies may "show" that those types of dogs are biting more than other breeds, you have to look at the source of their data (typically it would be emergency room visits, police reports, etc). If a Chihuahua bites you, is that victim more likely to go to the emergency room? It depends, but probably not.

Also, breed-specific legislation has proven to be ineffective in quelling dog bites. People still get bitten even in areas with this legislation.

A good blog about it:

Unsure. I hate to think that a law can deliberately erradicate a species of animal, but I'm also aware these dogs can be dangerous and aggressive. Some guy was just sentenced to a whack of years in jail 'cause his dogs went berserk. Maybe some dogs just can't be controlled even by the best trainers. Like the white tiger in the Siegfried show. Maybe pit bulls should be zoo animals?

Unsure.............I know when I lived in the UK they had a "Bad dog" law, not sure if its changed, but there are some breeders of "junk Yard" dogs that cross Neopolitan Bull Mastiffs with American Pit Bulls and stuff like that..........why would you do this?

I dont know if I agree?........... I had a friend who had a Rottweiler, grew up with his children they used to play all the time, the dog was very protective and would allow the child to do anything...... then one day out of the blue, the dog bit the child , I guess it had had enough?

I don't really think just because it was a Rottweiler it happened. I think it depends on the dog, and I don't think the breed matters.

No. A half century ago pit-bull-like dogs had a reputation for being good around kids. The problem is with the training, not anything particularly intrinsic to the breed (except their abilty to clench their jaw around a leg).

I figure in a century there will be palm sized weimeraners, wolfhounds, and other new breeds of apartment dogs around.

Dogs do have their natural breed-contingent tendencies though, like swimming, digging, burying, chasing, and such.

I feel It is all in how they are trained and cared for when they are puppies. Human to dog interaction being the key. I've seen German Shepards and Staffordshire Terriers and Rotweilers who were trained to be human friendly from the time they were puppies who have been near-docile. Sadly I have seen small dogs like Peekenese and Beagles who were abused that would take your fingers off in a heartbeat given a chance. It's all in their training. There are many good dog training videos on Youtube, check them out! The only exception to the training rule here may be a Wolf Hybrid type breed, as I am afraid these dogs have far to much of their hardwired feral-instincts just lurking below the surface to be kept in the home safely, esp if small kids are present.

No. Have you met my dog? He's bitten a few people, even have a scar on my face, and my mom has this scar on her arm, and I'm sure if he was in the wrong place at the wrong time, we'd have a huge lawsuit and have to put him down. He's been less bitey these days, but we don't really let other people pet him much. He hates men.

I lived a few months with a white wolf hybrid. He spent his evenings roaming the coast hunting burrowing critters, but was otherwise friendly enough.

That's great. In fact many people tell me the closest breed you can get to a W-H is a Siberian Huskie. My cousin has 2 of them and they are very friendly and family-oriented, but never disturb them when they are eating or if another one tries to assert itself it will bare it's teeth. I saw it - scary! Then 5 minutes later they are on the floor on the rug getting their belly rubbed and zonked out like they were a pair of female runway fashon models getting a massage at a spa! G-d bless all dogs, and cats too! (I own 3 cats)

I don't really know about the breeds of dogs. I am not sure how much what is said about pitbulls is truth or hype. However, I do think that owners should be held responsible for the actions of their animals. Many of the dogs that viciously maul young children are aggressive because their owners teach them to be that way.

No I don't agree that certain breeds of dogs should be outlawed. I have personally known only one pit-bull, he belonged to my brother. That dog was a big baby. Very friendly, but my brother could not leave him home alone, the poor thing would just start howling. That howl was the most forlorn and lonely sound I have ever heard.
