| dab | posted 18-Oct-2008 7:55am Eat moderately of healthy foods and exercise several times a week. I'm convinced that fifty years from now there will be a newspaper or magazine headline to the effect of: Scientists discover the secret to weight loss, it's diet and exercise! |
| Enheduanna | posted 18-Oct-2008 10:10am Follow a specific--and healthy--diet plan and exercise at least a half hour a day. For serious dieting, at least, I have heard that's the best way. I've never tried to lose more than a couple pounds, and when I tried by attempting to cut out snacking, I found that it was nearly impossible because all I did was think about the food I wasn't eating. When I finally lost those couple of pounds, it was because I was very busy and my mind was on other things, so I just didn't snack as much. So maybe that's a key element as well. Distract yourself from food with other activities. |
| Galomorro | posted 18-Oct-2008 11:36am Eat less and exercise as much as you can. |
| LJD | posted 18-Oct-2008 11:50am Since I've been battling this problem for many years, I know a little. I've never lost all my weight, and gained it back.
Two years ago, I lost 40 lbs. in about two 1-/2 months. The big key is feeling happy, having a good emotional balance. I ate fruit, nuts, almond milk at around 9:00AM, at around 1 or 2:00, I ate meat, salad, steamed vegetables. Alternate days, I'd switch to brown rice, salad, and steamed vegetables. I juiced carrots/apples/fresh ginger every day. At 6:00 I drank an Atkins Shake. I walked 7 minutes a day on my treadmill, about a minute or two fast, tried to break a sweat, the rest of the time, I walked normally. I have however, gained 20 of the 40 lbs back, for lack of control in eating foods I know will make me gain weight...wheat and corn products. My acupuncturist told me to get back on my regimen, but haven't the will, shame on me. If a person is diabetic, best to eat several small, quality meals, i.e. small amounts of quality foods, not eating after 6 or 7 in the evening. Check out the foods your body is allergic, or MAKE you gain weight..i.e. wheat, corn (blood type O) due to insulin use, depending on blood type. Meat MAKES blood type A people gain weight. Exercise, even if it's walking 10 minutes a day, depending on blood type. Drink plenty of water, get adequate rest. |
| LJD | posted 18-Oct-2008 11:56am Sorry I meant for small quality meals, as perhaps an apple, then a couple hours later, have a salad, then two hours later, a handful of almonds...etc. |
| LindaH | posted 18-Oct-2008 12:29pm Exercise!!! |
| Crayons | posted 18-Oct-2008 2:02pm I noticed that if you have a really strong bar of soap near you, your appetite diminishes. |
| romkey | posted 18-Oct-2008 9:48pm Starving yourself is a lousy way to lose weight. If you restrict calories too much, your metabolism will slow down and you'll be fighting yourself on losing weight.
The best way doesn't involve extremes. Have a reasonable plan for what you eat, get exercise, eat fewer calories than you need to maintain your weight, and you'll lose weight. It won't be fun and it won't be quick. |
| they | posted 19-Oct-2008 9:00am Cut out processed foods and sugars.
Stop being sedentary. Drink a lot of water. Think of food as fuel. |
| bill | posted 19-Oct-2008 11:47am The problem is primarily psychological. You probably already know you should be eating healthy foods in moderation and exercising. The question is, why aren't you doing this?
I think one way to help motivate yourself to make a lifestyle change is to recognize the health benefits of doing it, or alternately the health risks of not doing it. Eating too much unhealthy food and not exercising puts you at a much higher risk of getting various nasty diseases, especially when you get older. Being fat puts excess strain on your heart and vascular system which leads to heart disease resulting in heart attacks and strokes (the leading cause of death in the U.S.). |
| Gomezy3k | posted 19-Oct-2008 11:52am None of the above. Well Cocaine works great, back when I was a bad boy, went from 250 to 175 and stayed there as long as I was using. Unfortunately too expensive so quit and gained weight back...
Now have health problems and been exercising in swimming pool (cannot walk or ride bike), trying to watch what I eat, and cannot lose weight. |
| Cain | posted 19-Oct-2008 1:37pm Keep a food diary - swap sugary and fatty snacks for raw fruit and veg - cut down portion sizes - exercise regularly.
I lost quite a bit of weight by cuttng carbohydrates out of my diet, but I wouldn't recommend it to others as I lost all my energy. Now I'm at a weight I want, I've been maintaining a low carbohydrate diet, which has worked well so far. |
| ElvisFan67 | posted 19-Oct-2008 8:05pm I don't know yet--because I'm trying different methods myself (including a couple things on your list) and it hadn't worked very well so far. |
| jettles | posted 20-Oct-2008 10:54am eat sensibly and exercise |
| Matty | posted 21-Oct-2008 7:50am Not that.??? What is that doing in the survey? Anyway, I don't need to lose weight, and I eat what I want, so it would be hard for me to offer advice. |
| Melf | posted 21-Oct-2008 9:10am Stop. |
| JessicaWoman99 | posted 22-Oct-2008 1:08am Snacks and water all day long 8 glasses of water and yes those diet pills |
| Joanne | posted 22-Oct-2008 1:56am Okay, thanks! Favorite choice on this survey is exercise. Gotta tell you I lost 70 pounds last year from 220 to 150 with NO exercise. I ate more than I was used to, being a convenience-driven starver/binge-eater, but I ate throughout the day: 2 proteins, 3 veggies, 2 fruits, 2 starches, 1 fat, and the one thing that absolutely made the difference? Water. 8 glasses a day. A speeded-up metabolism is great, but if you don't eliminate the waste, it's being stored somewhere. Drink your water! |
| cloudhugger | posted 22-Oct-2008 10:25am I was going to say sex, but never mind. |
| Joanne | (reply to cloudhugger) posted 22-Oct-2008 7:34pm Ha! That was the "not that" . |
| LindaH | (reply to Joanne) posted 22-Oct-2008 8:21pm I was thinking 'not that' meant bulimia or illegal drugs. |
| Joanne | (reply to LindaH) posted 22-Oct-2008 11:31pm This is actually scientific. http://calorielab.com/news/2005/11/19/sex-diet-pro...

| Enigma | posted 26-Oct-2008 12:22am Stop eating like a fudging pig. |
| LindaH | (reply to Otter) posted 27-Oct-2008 10:59pm AMA doesn't recommend that. |
| wwsd | posted 3-Nov-2008 5:28pm Be happy with yourself before you start a diet plan. If you're not happy with yourself now you probably won't be after you lose the weight. |
| Biggles | posted 21-Jan-2009 7:36pm Starving, counting calories and following a diet plan all pretty much guarantee that you will lose weight. You'll put it back on (and overshoot) when you go back to your normal eating patterns though. Cutting calories is a lot more efficient than increasing your exercise levels when it comes to losing weight, but it's better to aim to be 'healthy' rather than 'thin' and overhaul your lifestyle in a way that you feel you can maintain. |
| LindaH | (reply to Biggles) posted 4-Feb-2009 10:53pm I found the opposite to be true. Cutting calories does nothing for me, but exercise works extremely well. |
