Everyone has their own language and conception of what the universe is about, or in fact does have different things happen to them which back up their position. It's not a problem in itself, but it does lead to much miscommunication and lack of compromise. |

Generally speaking, their flaw is that they aren't enough like me. |

When you think society's standards are either irrelevant, unimportant or simply don't apply to you, yet you expect others to adhere to your own set of arbitrary standards... maybe the problem isn't other people. |
| judgescratch |
Don't even try to figure that out. It's a waste of time. Just accept it. |

Nothing is wrong with people; the problem is expecting people to live up to ideals.
I you are referring to some recent events about what a few women have done to their children, I can tell you that I am not in the least surprised about atrocities some mothers commit against their children. |

What if I think some of society's standards are either irrelevant, unimportant or simply don't apply to me, yet I don't expect anyone to live up to arbitrary standards, just reasonable ones? |
bill |
we're so alike |
| icurok | | (reply to LindaH) posted 6-Oct-2008 10:39am |
And if the standards that you think don't apply to you are ones that society deems reasonable, how can you then expect other people to abide by what you deem to be reasonable? |
LindaH | | (reply to icurok) posted 6-Oct-2008 10:50am |
I only expect people to abide by standards when it comes to things that affect others directly. I'm fair. The standards I am against are not fair. |

They're exposed to too much TV; they're much too conservative and uptight; they believe everything they hear; too many of the religious ones want to force their religions on others; they do NOT think for themselves enough. Not everybody, but too many. |

I'd call it skirting the issue. People make bad choices; people give into their baser instincts; people are sick. What's the mystery? If you believe in the blood of Jesus, then you know Utopia cannot happen in this life. |

Oh but Utopia can exist! Just as long as there is no people...

I don't really think so; animals would do stupid things to destroy themselves, too! I highly believe this life was meant to be a struggle. |

You're better than Gretzky; now if I could only convince you to give a more concrete answer. |
Irene007 | | (reply to Matty) posted 7-Oct-2008 9:38am |
What? And we're not animals? The unfortunate thing about the human animal is that it thinks that it's superior to all other animals - it's one of the reasons that we're so destructive and greedy. All other animals know their place in the world. |
jettles |
ha! good question! |
Matty | | (reply to Irene007) posted 7-Oct-2008 9:58am |
I don't think other animals know anything other than when to eat, crap, and fudge.
I'm also going to disagree with you here; people are superior to other animals, religious reasons aside. We can modify our environment; we can cultivate food; we can reason; and above all, we can be compassionate.
And, no, I don't consider myself to be an animal. |
LindaH | | (reply to Matty) posted 7-Oct-2008 10:27am |
What do you mean, life was meant to be a struggle? What do you make of people who (by honest means) make their life into something with the least amount of struggle possible, and who purge challenges from life as fast as possible? |

LindaH | | (reply to Matty) posted 7-Oct-2008 11:29am |
I don't understand, though. You are supposed to suffer in life? Seems like a negative attitude, to me. I think we are meant to avoid suffering as much as possible. I don't think things are supposed to come easy and free, but if you can manage to make life as easy for yourself as you can, more power to you. |
Matty | | (reply to LindaH) posted 7-Oct-2008 11:32am |
What's the mystery already? Life is meant to be a struggle. But if you're not struggling...great...so what? |
LindaH | | (reply to Matty) posted 7-Oct-2008 11:35am |
I wouldn't even look at it like it was meant to be a struggle. For the most part, life is meant to be enjoyed. That's my take on life anyway. |
Matty | | (reply to LindaH) posted 7-Oct-2008 12:34pm |
ok, but you seem to miss my point absolutely and entirely.
Try to think expansively. WHy is it you feel that struggling and enjoyment are mutually exclusive? Isn't making it through life's trials what makes life enjoyable. If nothing ever happend to you, and every moment of your existence was pleasant, could you really be happy? Isn't visceral comradre bourn out of mutual struggle? |
LindaH | | (reply to Matty) posted 7-Oct-2008 2:00pm |
I think I could, but I'm probably different than most people. I like fun challenges, but I can't stand complicated struggles. I could do without the obstacles of running into difficulties. I'd enjoy life much more if that sort of thing never happened. |

People dont know how to 1) live and let live 2) give others the benefit of the doubt 3) care about the FEELINGS of other people in spite of how they are perceived 4) treat others the way they'd want to be treated.
I always say you can THINK whatever you want about other people but you should treat them right and be kind if they have never done anything to you. Why treat others bad based on what you assume? This is a big problem other people have. Aholes to strangers. I think it's becoming more common. Too many people see others they come across as non human, no feelings, just a 'screen name'. lol Even in real life-in public. |
