They should just build better levys. New Orleans is too great a city to not rebuild. |

Well, Gustav wasn't so bad. But, I would like to see a more practical approach to this problem. From what I've read, it seems that there are parts of the city that would be very costly to make safe from future storms. Also, there's some indication that we may be entering a period of heavy hurricane activity in that area, with category 4 (maybe even 5) being more likely. It may be more cost effective to leave the lowest areas of the city. Spend the money on relocation people instead of building higher and higher levees (which still may fail). |

I think that if this becomes a yearly thing..... New Orleans should be abandoned. It's ignorant to waste time and money to keep rebuilding something that will fall down in a year again anyway.
It's like trying to set up house in a sand castle. |

And even thou this hurricane Gustav missed New Orleans and did some damage the hurricane spared New Orleans and who say's the next hurricane will miss New Orleans again because it could happen all over again. |

Matty with all the technology in this world it seems they could build stronger! and better levees? |

And look at the billions and billions of dollars they are spending on New Orleans and it has to be the taxpayers that are paying for rebuilding New Orleans it seems a waste of money |

Your question and your explanation ask opposite yes/no questions, so I'm not sure which option to pick. I think the people of New Orleans should rebuild if they want to. |
Galomorro | | posted 2-Sep-2008 11:45am |
Of course they should not halt any efforts to rebuild. People in that part of the country are used to rebuilding after hurricanes. It's their home-of course they will rebuild and do their best to build better resistance to these storms. |

A city is not its buildings. A city is its people.
And what are you intending to do with the big hole where New Orleans once was? |

well it didnt destroy it so........ |

I think the people who want to rebuild should rebuild and those who don't shouldn't. No one should be forced to rebuild or to fund others' rebuilding. |

Not any less than rebuilding San Fransico after that big ass earthquake. |
jettles |
no, it isn't even close to being rebuilt and the levees are not even 20% done! |

There is also another hurricane on the way to the Gulf Coast it is getting very active with hurricanes right now. |

New Orleans is in a very bad location. It's close to the coast in a very hurricane prone area and several feet below see level; not a good combination. |

I'll be sincere about it .. I picked other because that's a question far beyond my comprehension. If they stay, everyone will call them foolish for it. If they leave, they leave their homes (again). The only thing I worry of is a lack of normality for the children, elderly, and sick. |

If I were a god-fearing man, I would think Louisiana is getting what they deserve... but I'm an atheist, so I think folks should just move away from there until we can determine what is making god angry. |

Oh gee if another hurricane or 2 comes their way the darn fools Ray Nagin should just evacuate New Orleans and get everybody out of there and right now before (Dooomsday) |

No. They should go ahead and rebuild. It shouldn't be up to anyone else to say they shouldn't. As long as there is property, and people willing to build on it, they should go ahead and build on it. Just because others think someone is being short-sighted or stupid, that doesn't mean anyone should stop them. Freedom means the freedom to make mistakes. |

No. It was a stupid idea to build it there in the area in the first place, but what did people know. Actually, I'm sure they knew something but they ignored it for whatever reason. The area is unstable and Mississipi's delta is constantly shifting, so just leave it. |

Here is my opinion and something else to say
At this point being so far away, and having nothing to do with it before...I don't care. I am sure if I would care, and care alot ifit affected me or someone I know. It just doesn't seem like a part of my life or even remotely going to be a part of my life.
I know that the people there are very passionate about there city and I can honor that. But to save something that is potentially costly, and being such a tiny area compared to the rest of the US...who decides what gets rebuilt and what doesn't? The entire state of Nebraska has been dying a very slow and painful death, and Wisconsin is in dire need of assistance....one city or the rest of us.? |

Yes and no... Parts of it should be rebuilt but unfortunately over the centuries too many idiots built, bought houses, or whatever in places that they should not have and therefore have no business whining if they get flooded. The parts that do not flood, or only a little should be rebuilt though... |
