One house, one condo, and one boat (that we live on). We've simplified a bit---we used to have another house and another condo.

I own zero houses. I currently rent two apartments, though: one in San Francisco (home) and one in New York (work).

Technically, zero (the banks own it), but I said 1 because I assume you'd want mortgage to count as ownership.

You really need an apartment in Paris too.

None! :(

I really want to own a house one day, sooner rather than later, but I don't know if that'll ever happen. It seems impossible to save money for a down payment, and the way lending is going, I don't know how likely it'll be that I would qualify for a loan.

Actually, no one really owns a home, a property....because the government owns it all....through taxation.

Clarify the question, I have one mortgage, one house. But I hardly own it!

I couldn't sell my NY house, so I rented it; I just break even on the mortgage. Anyway, I had to get a VA mortgage on my MD house. My mortgage is about 40% of our take-home pay. When I do sell my NY house things will change for the better.

This is not even really close to true; you can disobey town ordinances, county laws, etc. As long as you pay your taxes, the government can do very little about what you do with your property. Further, the property taxes you pay have nothing to do with an individual property and everything to do with funding the governmental services provided to you as a resident.

This view about the government owning your house is typical of Libertarian nonsense.

Matty, if I did not pay my property taxes, the government could take my property.....taxes = confiscation. I'd say people own property if they didn't have to pay taxes.

I feel they should be able to support government services with all the other taxes government has drummed up. Why tax private property owners? We're all taxed to death now. I feel we need another tax revolution. We need a flat tax..fair taxes. We need to cut down on government, less government, less taxes.

What does your perception of being overtaxed have to do with ownership of property? You said because of property taxes, we are not the real owners of our property. Yet, your own response stated the government could confiscate your property if you didn't pay your taxes.

If you don't pay sales tax on any one item, you cannot take possession of that item. Does this mean that local governments own all the commercial goods in America?

It appears you feel it's okay for home property owners to pay taxes for some things, that non property owners don't. Why? In essence, what they're doing in this country is ....turning to communism. The elitists are doing it in increments. It is meant to enslave us all, except the elitists.

Even the 'elitists' have to pay taxes on their property. Non-property owners generally have it much worse than property owners.

The elitists pay taxes in one hand, and it's given back to them through write-offs.

Years ago, I worked as a housekeeper for a doctor and his wife who owned a real estate company, was in the multi million dollar bracket. I helped the wife serve at her social gatherings. One night I overheard three or four "business, and local government people" talking. One fellow piped up and said he does not pay taxes, but the working fellow does. He wasn't bragging, but just made a true statement.

I haven't a problem with a person having money, if he/she made the money legally, and morally. BUT, what I do resent is government/big business people receiving all sort of ridiculous write-offs at the expense of other people.

I agree with that. You are right to say these things. Which is why it baffles me all the more that you vote for the party most likely to not only continue this process but make it worse.

Again, this is way off point. You said that taxes mean we don't own anything; I think that's nonsense.

Communism, huh? Look, 1987 called, and it wants its tired ideology back.

BTW, the first redistribution of wealth is described in the book of the Acts of the Apostles. Peter took resources from the rich and gave them to Christians who needed them. Further, some of the wealthiest Christians who held back funds from the newly formed Christian brotherhood were punished by the Holy Spirit. Again, this is where your idealogy clashes with your faith...and the spirit of the Bible loses again.
