Do you have a battery back-up for your desktop computer?

These are usually used by people who are prone to power outtages and or people who have an erratic electrical supply.
These systems provide about 5-15mins of power, enough time for you to save work and shut down your system safely.

It may look something like this:

Yes, my wife and I each have one for our desktop computers, plus another for the routers and cable modem. The house beeps a lot when we lose power. I still have an extra one that I used to use for the computers that ran Survey Central in the basement, but I think the battery on it is nearly dead.

We have several UPSs around but I'm not currently using one for my desktop computer as my desktop computer is now a laptop.

A UPS is a very good idea for a desktop machine because in addition to getting you through brief power outages, it also provides a great deal of surge protection. If your computer isn't using some kind of surge protector (good power strips will do this as well), you might consider just dropping it out a window right now.

Yes...and no. In the US, we do. On the boat in Hong Kong, we do not.

In Jamaica the power supply is a bit bad and as I play for money getting a power cut in the middle of a big hand would piss me off, I use two, one for the computer & Screen, one for the ancillary stuff ..Modem, router, speakers as well as everything goes through an APC surge protector.

It has saved me many a time

Where is really pays dividends is the when the power has the odd "Hiccup" trips in and out, I remember when we had a hurricaine and I booted up the computer in complete darkness just so I could post a message here! *laughing out loud*

No; I use a laptop. (Although even when I had a desktop, I didn't have one.) My SO has one for his server, though.

Naw. I think we've had two power outages in the ten years we've lived here. We're having a thunderstorm at the moment (kind of a novelty, we only get one or two a year) and the usually crappy internet connection is holding.
