I don't see the controversy. |

Undecided. I'd have to read the reasoning behind the ban, and the arguments for and against. |

It doesn't affect me, since I don't smoke. I wish less people would smoke, and if providing less places to buy cigarettes helps that, then it's ok with me. |
dab |
I'd have to hear an incredibly convincing argument why selling cigarettes at pharmacies is somehow worse than selling them at any other store. |
Enheduanna |
Really? I live in SF and hadn't heard about this! I think it's fine, though. There will still be tons of places to buy cigarettes if you smoke. |
Melf |
I'm in favour of it. It's ludicrious you can already. |
Iseult |
I think it's idiotic that they sell cigarettes at pharmacies in the first place. |
bill |
I think it's better to let individual stores decide if they want to sell cigarettes in their store or not. |

I suppose if the problem is that pharmacies are suppose to be places to buy things that are good for your health, there are a number of other things we could block them from selling too... this could be fun. What about candy bars? Twinkies? Chocolate donuts (like in my avatar)! Soda! Some diet pills really seem quite questionable to me too... Lets get all up in pharmacy's business. We know better than them! |

I'm in favor of it because it has been shown to be so dangerous to health, including that of secondhand smoke -- and being a pedestrian, I get exposed to secondhand smoke every few yards while walking on the sidewalks. I also cannot stand the smell of tobacco smoke and resent the inadvertent exposure I keep getting thru no fault of my own. I think they should do everything they can to discourage smoking because it's a health hazard and does affect other people, not just the smokers themselves. The reasoning behind this was partly because pharmacies are in the bizness of health and here they are selling a deadly drug in the same store. Sure it's true they'll just go elsewhere but I still like the idea of discouraging the habit as much as possible -- maybe this might discourage some kids from ever starting (well, anything's possible), or cause more people to decide to attempt giving the habit up cuz it's so much hassle... |

What if they sold the cigarettes behind the counter or near cessation products and literature? They could use it as an opportunity to reach the smokers. |
Galomorro | | (reply to LindaH) posted 5-Aug-2008 7:41pm |
True. Good idea. Someone also said that because the pharmacies also sell cessation products, someone might decide while in the drugstore to buy one of these products. They could put very noticeable cessation items and literature prominently on the counter and people would see these when having to ask for cigs that are behind the counter. |

I really don't care. What's the point of banning them in certain stores? It wont make much of a difference anyway.... |
kcthedog | | posted 5-Aug-2008 11:36pm |
I think they should take all smokers of tobacco and line them up and shoot them and save them all the money and trouble to kill themselves! The money saved over tobacco should be spent on chronic and distributed amongst the non-tobacco smokers. |
Strider | | posted 5-Aug-2008 11:41pm |
I would say a pharmacy selling them makes as much sense as a children's hospital handing them out to children. |

You crazy americans, with your crazy method of writing dates........
(I have no opinion on this - if they want to smoke, they'll find a way). |

Each to their own and everything, but it doesn't make sense! Days are the smallest figure, months are medium and years are largest, so the british ascending order day/month/year just looks neater than month/day/year..............................
.................aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanyway. |

i dont smoke me personaly i think they should band all of it |

Who cares? Who buys smokes at a drugstore anyhow? |

I am in favor because--- why in the hell would a pharmacy of all places sell tobacco. Thats like the Peace Corps having a gift shop that sells bullets.
That said, liquor stores (wow, liquor stores selling tobacco, imagine that), supermarkets and everyone else should go ahead and sell them. Its how the free market works. As long as there's demand for it, people will sell it. |

I am in favor because people are committing their own suicide by smoking and hurting other people as well |

It's because of that way my friend and I are constantly unsure of what the date is. I'm sure you guys have been doing it that way longer, so..I'm going to blame us.
But today's date is 8-11-2008 |
Melf | | (reply to llamamama) posted 12-Aug-2008 7:30pm |
It was 8/8/8 the other day... no way anyone could get confused |
| llamamama | | (reply to Melf) posted 13-Aug-2008 2:30pm |
This is very true. More days should be like that. |

Cigarettes are only good for killing yourself .. I say ban them altogether. |
| docgbrown | | posted 13-Sep-2008 6:09pm |
I have never smoked but I'm not in favor of it because if violates their free agencies without a compelling state's interest to do so |

I don't use tobacco products and have never been to San Francisco so it doesn't affect me at all, but I don't see anything wrong with this ban. How many people go to a pharmacy to buy tobacco products anyway? I don't see the problem with going to a supermarket, convenience store, or a liquor store; that's where most people buy tobacco products. |
