Is it better to make a lame response or no response at all?

Lets say someone says something to you that is funny and perhaps pokes fun at you and thus implies a comeback response from you. You try to think of something funny to say back to them, but all you can come up with is a lame joke that just isn't as good as the original. Is it better to use that lame response or to simply say nothing?

My sense of humour is such that I'll try and make the lame response sound like comedy gold, though it's obvious I know it's rubbish. Or I'll say the response in a siff manner of speaking and then say 'See, I showed you. I win.'

Oh, and it's 'let's' * winking raspberry *

Nothing. Just laugh. Or you can use laughter as a stall until you can think of something good, if it will happen.

It depends on the effect you're going for.

Say nothing. If you say something lame, it gives them more fuel to make fun of you. Id rather calmly walk off and let them appear the meanie.

For the example given...no response is funnier than a lame joke.

I get this a lot working behind a bar, and I'm not good at snappy comebacks, so I usually say nothing and just stare at them.

Know what I can't stand? (not 'comeback' related)

When someone says something spontaneous and witty, causing a lot of people to laugh, and some jealous narcissist ruins the mood by saying "Or like..." followed by a really lame comment. All the mirth in the room becomes a combination of bewilderment and pity. You can't add to a joke by making a stupid 'continuation'. You only subtract from it.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.

You have to stay in the game to win the game.

This is hard to answer without an exact description of the scenario or your goal in offering a response. Social nuances are difficult enough to navigate even with all the facts. However, I would suggest that if someone made a funny joke at your expense, you should laugh. A sense of humor is more important than posturing.

Again, however, I'd like to know a little more about what actually happened.

Personally I think it's better to say nothing and not bother trying to humor the person, but I get the vibe that isn't polite.

Impolite to say nothing? I get the opposite feeling.

As in if you're saying nothing, you're telling them "Your comment was stupid. So stupid I'm not even going to reply."

Oh. I think that over-thinking people's behavior, especially their inaction creates unnecessary offense. People who read sentiments into things are setting themselves up to be offended. Putting words into people's mouth when they haven't even opened it. That's what I call that. * laughing out loud *

I don't think so. I think people say thing like what the survey creator is suggesting with the intent of getting a response - like a chuckle or whatnot. While I feel it should be fine to just say nothing, I think if you are the sole audience to such a comment, the person feels something is missing if there is no response. The few times I've been in the situation (the one I feel the survey creator is describing), and I've said nothing, the person has repeated whatever it was they said, thinking I didn't hear - which makes me conclude they wanted some kind of response.
