Is there any TV show you watch, or have watched, that was really good in the beginning, and then it started getting progressively worse?

After seeing The Office UK, it took me a lot of time and patience to give a chance to The Office US. When I finally did start getting into it, I really enjoyed the first season. The second season was okay - a little bit gimmicky, but starting to acquire its own flavour. By the third season, not only did the gimmicks grow restless and unbelievable, but the plot began to be dominated by the dynamics of romantic relationships around the office. Dwight and Angela, Jan and Michael, Kelly and Ryan, etc. Now I'm on the fourth season, and I still think it's a good show to watch, but I can't get over all the drama. If I wanted to watch something with a lot of relationship drama, I'd watch ... well, I honestly don't know what I would watch because relationship drama is just tiresome.

Mighty Boosh
Big Brother
Green Wing

They're the only ones I can think of off the top of my head.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer had a drop in quality after the 5th season, but I wouldn't say it was terrible. Plus, their 2nd & 3rd seasons were so amazing, there's no way to beat that.

I'd definitely say the X-Files, I lost interest around the 6th or 7th season. Same for ER - it should've ended a while ago.

Also, I said it in Qual, but want to repeat myself - give the Office another shot! It's one of my favorite shows, is incredibly funny, and I don't feel it's suffering yet. The cast did sign for another three seasons though, so they'll have many opportunities to suck it up!

I feel this way about shows frequently. I thought this about the last season or so of Buffy; the West Wing; Gilmore Girls; Six Feet Under (although they managed to reverse the course and the end was really good). I'm sure there are others. I think it's a combination of factors: it's difficult to keep a good show good over an extended period of time; sometimes shows lose good writers; sometimes they jump the shark; and sometimes familiarity just breeds contempt.

I loved the first season of Prison Break, now I can't stand it. Stopped watching it all together.

Not really - there are a lot of shows where the first season has been excellent and following seasons haven't been quite as good, but never to the point where I've wanted to stop watching it.......

I love US TV. Friends, The Simpsons, Nip/Tuck, Desperate Housewives, The X-files, Sex and the City, Frasier, Futurama, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, ER, Family Guy, Lost, The West Wing - all fantastic!!

No cuz I don't watch TV. Don't care for sitcoms.

Roswell was genius the first season. Seriously. It became less consistent and went downhill from there. I don't know what was happening behind the scenes, but I theorized that they had too many writer switch-ups.

The incredible hulk, McGyver, Wonder Woman, Mork and Mindy, The Golden Girls and MASH near the end.

Doesn't that describe most TV shows? *smile*

I thought that The Office was always about finding the comedy in relationship drama.

Yes, this has happened. the Office US is a good example BUT I am really liking the show now. It took a year to figure out what it was about, and the next year was funny. The following year sucked but the last season had me in stitches.
I can't think of a show now, maybe I will, but I know this has happened.

I'm glad you are watching The Office - American style. Is this Iseult?

I feel the same way about it. I know the character of Michael is necessary -- but I don't really care for him or the actor who plays him very much. Dwight and Jim make the show... but it's a little tired, I agree.

I thought the fourth season was the worst. I almost stopped watching. And fifth was too much drama. It kind of picked up in the sixth, but it went back down in seventh.
But I must agree, second and third were amazing.

I'm definitely going to keep watching it because it's one of the rare sitcoms that doesn't make me want to vomit.

I only watched the first season of Six Feet Under. I liked it, but not enough to continue watching it.

I'm actually in the middle of a re-watch now - my boyfriend is watching it for the first time. He really likes it so far, we just finished the third season last night.

The more I thought about it, the last few seasons didn't have the amazing overall arc the 2nd and 3rd did. But they had some great stand-alone episodes - Hush, The Body, Something Blue, Once More With Feeling. I really liked the 6th season, with the whole Buffy being ripped out of heaven arc, and I did like her relationship with Spike. But once they got out of high school, it was never the same.

I also have all seasons of Six Feet Under. It was a good series, but so frustrating. The characters never grow and keep repeating the same mistakes over and over, which I suppose is pretty true to life, but left you disliking pretty much every character.

However, the last 10 minutes of the last episode ever - pretty much made up for all six seasons. It was fudging amazing.

I adored Six Feet Under. I agree it did go downhill at the time she showed up... also, when that blonde girl from American Beauty showed up and Claire experimented with lesbianism. I really do like Lily Taylor though.... and I did like her character on the show too.

I normally like Lily Taylor, but I thought her character was just awful. I couldn't stand her.

I watched 3:10 to Yuma the other day and there was an actor who looked really familiar to me in it. I looked him up afterwards, and it turns out he played Claire's awful art school boyfriend Russell.

That's exactly what it is - Buffy getting out of High School - that ruined everything. It removed Giles and Xander, and Cordelia left (don't get me started on what they did to her character in Angel, I'll never forgive them, because I used to love the dog she was), and you can see them trying really hard to get everyone to stay together.

I also agree about her relationship with Spike. It just seemed unnatural. I can't get over the fact that he fell in love with her.

My boyfriend really liked Cordelia, and wasn't happy with her character after the break-up with Xander. He was convinced Snyder would be the big bad in the fourth season, and really psyched himself up for it. When Snyder bit it, he was NOT happy. "Whaaat??? NOOOOOOOOOO!"

I don't know. I mean, they had some really decent character arcs in some of the seasons, some intense stuff going on. And then there was a lot of bullcrap. But all that said, I do own the entire series. So I'd say give it a whirl.
