It's a combination of eating too much, eating the wrong stuff, having jobs tht don't require physical work, and not excercising. Luckily, my wife and I eat healthy foods (making stuff from scratch) and make a concerted effort to excercise rigorously.

Forty years from now there will be a news headline saying, "Scientists have discovered the key to losing weight: eat less and exercise more".

Many from the list. A lack of personal responsibilty, processed foods and sedentary lifestyles being the top 3.

Processed foods.
Genetics. I know I go through phases where I go on about how fat I am, but in fact I know people who eat less than I and eat better, and they're fat. I have fast metabolism and can eat whatever I want.
Sedentary lifestyle. Cars are used for everything nowadays. I know it's convenient, especially if you live in a smaller place, but one should try not to rely so much on such method of transportation.
Lack of exercize.

Lack of exercise, sedentary lifestyles, social class, soft drinks, sugar, U.S. culture, advertisements/marketing, corn syrup, fast foods, junk food. I think too many pay too much attention to commercials they see on TV for one thing, especially kids.

HIGH FRUCTOSE corn syrup. And maybe corn syrup.
Junk food. Usually has high fructose corn syrup in it, or other chemicals that block the body's agbility to function properly.
Processed food. It isn't live, it's dead food. Dead food in a body has no workable calories. The body has to make fat to have something to burn. Sedentary lifestyle combined with dead food make a body not function in elimination and needed fuel.
Diet food. Worst thing in the world to lose weight with. Fake sweeteners also trick the body.
Any food ot live, or created in a lab does not feed the body nor the mind. If the mind isn't getting the nutrients needed to function, it also creates sedentary lifestyles.
People nopt knowing. Since the late 1890's, when farina became the new food, things have gone down hill. Nutrition wise. If people really knew what they were doing to their bodies, they would make better decisions. The overwhelming information on what is healthy and what isn't, is too much for most to make the changes neccesary to remain healthy, or get healthy. One would have to be wealthy to eat better, and that isn't right. Ever since the 50's when "Modern" was the buzz word, convenience food becamenew and easy.

Apathy is another reason for obesity. You can't make someone are about their health. That would be lack of personal responsibility.

lack of exercise, sedentary lifestyle plus the increase in processed and fatty foods that are available and served in huge portions and then it is topped off with some people's genetics too. it is definitely a combination but i think it starts with our increasing sedentary lifestyles!!!

I think there are several causes... For me, health is a problem. I cannot walk, sit, or stand for any length of time and suffer from depression so I have gained weight since I cannot move like I used to... I would love to be able to walk and exercise like I used to but cannot. And unfortunately my weight has sky rocketed up... And eating those so called "diet foods" suck.. I tried eating "healthy" and I hate fish so that is out, and eating lots of lettuce and veggies sucks because I am hungry 10 minutes after eating... As a saying goes, "My ancestors didn't claw their way up the food chain to eat veggies.."

Also, my birth parents were both on the larger side so I get bad genes to blame also... Along with some mental health issues...

Everything I read and hear about losing weight always says "EXERCISE"..well what if you cannot exercise without extreme pain and agony? For me, it is nerve damage in my outer left leg, and lower back pain... Periods of "ache" with a lot of severe pain here... I have almost no knee cartilage in my left knee and also have nerve damage so I am in extreme pain if I walk or stand for any length of time, and my back hurts if I sit or lay down, so I am pretty much screwed and in pain most of the time....

I am on disability and cannot afford to buy the high priced diet meals and food and I definitely cannot afford to go to a gym where I might get specialized help in doing exercises I am able to do. So basically I am screwed, blued and tattoo'd as my ol' pappy used to say....
