| they | posted 12-Jul-2008 12:56am No way. |
| Galomorro | posted 12-Jul-2008 1:21am I don't commute and don't have a job. But this sounds like a good deal to me. |
| kcthedog | posted 12-Jul-2008 3:02am No way, no day; I need to have a set schedule and method for arriving to work. |
| kcthedog | posted 12-Jul-2008 3:03am Matty, your writing style gives you away. |
| icurok | posted 12-Jul-2008 8:25am Not a chance. It's better to find the person who lives nearest to me and carpool with them. |
| moviesnob | posted 12-Jul-2008 9:07am I'm fine with carpooling, but this doesn't sound very safe. |
| Biggles | posted 12-Jul-2008 10:28am Not alone, but if I could do it with a couple of friends/work colleagues then that might be okay (i.e two or three people all getting together into a stranger's car). I've shared taxis with strangers before, even with lone men in strange parts of Liverpool (no public transport early in the morning on bank holidays when I had to get to work), but felt pretty safe because of the presence of the driver...though really that's no absolute guarantee of safety. |
| LJD | posted 12-Jul-2008 11:08am Sounds like an efficient way of doing things. |
| Enheduanna | posted 12-Jul-2008 11:52am Not that I have the need for something like this anyway, but if I did, I wouldn't use it. I would just arrange a carpool with people I worked with, so that I knew every day that I would have a way to get to work. That way you share around the gas costs, rather than just being a mooch, and you have the security of knowing you have a ride that will get you there on time. If you have a car full of people, it's just as efficient. Also, I would be uncomfortable getting in a car with someone I didn't know. What if an axe-murderer picked me up? |
| southernyankee | posted 12-Jul-2008 2:51pm Would I do it? No way. Too disorganized and unreliable. |
| Cain | posted 12-Jul-2008 3:27pm I don't have to commute at present, but if I did, and I was convinced I could reliably get to work on time each day - this is something I would consider. |
| jettles | posted 12-Jul-2008 4:32pm i would try it but i work such unconventional hours i don't think i could do it on a regular basis |
| JessicaWoman99 | posted 13-Jul-2008 12:13am I do not commute to work nor live in any big city |
| LindaH | posted 13-Jul-2008 12:29am Depends on my job and schedule.
I think it would be cool if there was 'sections' of a large parking lot, each section dedicated to specific areas of town. I dont know if it would work any better, just an interesting thought. |
| Iseult | posted 13-Jul-2008 11:06am Not a bad idea. Wouln't be horribly opposed to doing it. |
| Lahdee | posted 13-Jul-2008 2:46pm How does anyone know they aren't hopping in a car with a crazy person? |
| cloudhugger | posted 13-Jul-2008 7:13pm That sounds bizarre. How do you know the driver is legit? Or the rider is legit? |
| Matty | (reply to cloudhugger) posted 14-Jul-2008 7:38am You don't; that's why I don't. |
| Matty | (reply to Lahdee) posted 14-Jul-2008 7:39am The car fills up, so there are others with you until the ride is over. |
| Matty | (reply to LindaH) posted 14-Jul-2008 7:40am As I understand it, there are newspaper adds describing which parking facilities have these ad-hoc carpooling things, but I don't think the organization is any more than that. |
| Matty | (reply to they) posted 14-Jul-2008 7:42am The woman in your avatar photo looks like my Mom (except younger of course). |
| Matty | (reply to kcthedog) posted 14-Jul-2008 7:44am Wouild you mind explaining? Is it simply a feel, or are there distinct characteristic? Just curious. |
| cloudhugger | (reply to Matty) posted 14-Jul-2008 8:00am honestly, it sounds like a bad story in the making. That is probably way worse than picking up a hitch hiker. |
| they | (reply to Matty) posted 14-Jul-2008 8:14am Do you not recognize her? |
| Matty | (reply to cloudhugger) posted 14-Jul-2008 8:17am I agree, but many people are doing it. |
| Matty | (reply to they) posted 14-Jul-2008 8:18am Well, I immediately thought of my mother when I saw it. Other than that...no. |
| they | (reply to Matty) posted 14-Jul-2008 8:52am It's Bill and Hillary. |
| Matty | (reply to they) posted 14-Jul-2008 8:54am Oh wow, I never would have guessed that. |
| they | (reply to Matty) posted 14-Jul-2008 8:55am I love this old picture of them. It reminds me of my parents too. |
| Matty | (reply to they) posted 14-Jul-2008 8:58am It's a shame that Hillary looks so happy there, but so fudging miserable today. Maybe Bill was faithful back then. |
| they | (reply to Matty) posted 14-Jul-2008 9:32am Does she look miserable to you now? She doesn't to me. I don't think we can know for sure that this is even something that bothers her. After all, she is still with the man. If it's just for political gain, well then - she's getting what she wants.
If she just still thinks he's hot -- I can see her point. |
| Matty | (reply to they) posted 14-Jul-2008 10:06am Yeah, she's looks like she just took a NY-style fudging. I know you're not from the boros, so I'll explain. When The City is against you, nothing goes right for you. People called that a NY fudging. |
| LindaH | posted 14-Jul-2008 1:04pm Okay, if there's going to be a bunch of people in the car with you, how could anyone not be "legit"? You think the driver's going to try anything stupid with a car full of people? If he had a death wish, maybe. |
| RainingFeathers | posted 14-Jul-2008 8:58pm I take the bus, and that works well for me. $70 a month and I can get anywhere I want to at almost any time of day (It`s hard to travel between 1 and 6 am, but I generally don`t need to anyway). I think it`s an inteesting idea, but not something I need to do. |
| kcthedog | (reply to Matty) posted 14-Jul-2008 11:23pm Sophisticated and informed, intelligent, confident, with a flare of arrogance, yet somehow reserved. But I could be wrong. |
| Matty | (reply to kcthedog) posted 15-Jul-2008 8:05am Most of that is complimentary, and I thank you; but what's most interesting to me is the reserved flare of arrogance. That's an astute observation with characteristics I had not given myself. I'll try to be mindful of that, but I'm also just like Popeye...I am what I am and that's all that I am.
Maybe the arrogance is simply pride; but you're a better judge than I am of how my posts come across. I think my reservations stem from the fact that this is a far left site, and I don't like to be labelled. In fact, I am neither conservative nor liberal. My views are more closely based on my faith, my education, and my job than any political leaning or theory. My faith tells me to try and be compassionate as possible. Thus, I despise big business and our system of laws that says profit to stockholders is the only concern. My education is essentially, the practice of public administration and the various theories that shape the day-to-day practices of government. So, I view what most people see as government myopia and even bureaucracy in an entirely different light. My job, well, that's constantly evolving, but I was a commissioned officer in the greatest Army the world has ever known for about 8 years, and then, went into the Secret Service as a security policy analyst. My AO was bio/agri terrorism pertaining to South America. The latter was often rewarding, always stressful, and in the end, not worth it to me. I learned a lot of stuff from HHS and the Department of Agriculture that I'll never use again. Currently, I am a fraud investigator with the Department of Labor, Office of Workers Compensation Programs. I like this job more. Anyway, what is significant about my career, and what I suspect makes most people think they understand my political views, is that I was and am still willing to do our nation's bitter business. As far as I am concerned, when the bad man comes to your house, you kill him first, then let your neighbors piss and moan about his rights. Anyway, I hope this gives you some further insight, bo do know it's also probably been a boring read. So, cheers, and thanks for your response. |
| kcthedog | (reply to Matty) posted 15-Jul-2008 10:43pm OK, I recall the "reserved part" but you do make my point! |
| penguin388 | posted 20-Jul-2008 11:02pm No, because as a woman, I'm not getting into a car with a stranger. |
| cerealkiller | posted 24-Jul-2008 6:40pm People do that here all the time to get into San Fran from across the bay. I have no set schedule for when I go to work, go home or even bother to go at all. I hate carpools, relying on other bozo's to show up on time or at all, and last time I rode with someone they always had the heater turned up so I was suffocating from heat. |
| Matty | (reply to penguin388) posted 28-Jul-2008 12:43pm Would you get into a strange car as a Wonder Twin? |
