Gaming systems have become true multi-media devices; they're no longer toys.

Why can't they be considered toys if they are for adults too? |

This is a daft survey.
I don't think there's a good reason that can be found for associating video games with children. Many video games are aimed at not-children specifically (Manhunt, GTA, etc). Just because it's an interactive gadget doesn't necessarily make it a 'toy', and in turn if it is a toy that doesn't necessarily make it something for children. I mean, what's to say a TV isn't a 'toy'? It's semi-interactive, it's a personal entertainment experience... um, it has a screen, and so on.
Also, children's games have never really had the dominance of video gaming. I mean Pokémon got pretty huge on the gameboy and that, but I'm not certain there's a specific period which can be called the golden age for children's video gaming. Basically, video games haven't exactly outgrown children just as televisions haven't outgrown children with TiVos and HD. Also, have the basic functions really changed that much? It's just more buttons to shoot with. Shoot with. As in, not for kids. |

No, you have just turned into an old fart who doesn't remember how sophisticated the Atari seemed when it came out. |

If they had outgrown children..would children still spend every waking moment playing them?
They've just evolved with the times.. |

true multi-media devices can be toys
I grew up playing video games and just never stopped. |

I never thought they were "toys" anyway. Lots of people of different ages like to play these games, not just kids. I started off playing with early standalone systems as an adult but then they got more and more difficult, so I look for easier games on the computer. I don't like it that they have to be hooked up to a TV. What if one doesn't have a TV? Do they still need to be, or can one buy a standalone without the bothersome hookup nightmares? So if I found a game I liked, like a new Scrabble, for instance, that would run with my present computer, I'd look to buy the software for my computer or download it from the company directly onto my computer, like I did with AceReader's Speedread program. |

They are toys for adults and kids, just like a frizbee is. |

Multi-media..
Totally off subject but:
Ick!!! OMG, the biggest fudging ant just ran across my desk straight at my hand before I realized it was there. . It was over an inch long. *gag* I hit it with a book and there were guts everywhere I just smoked a half a blunt - now I'm freaking out there are more. What a waste of half a blunt.
I should have taken a picture... it was unreal big. Even the guts were huge.

Gaming systems have become true multi-media devices; they're no longer toys.
And being that they are no longer "toys" they should used with the same responsibility as driving a car. Age limit should apply! |

still toys, most children understand and control them better than many adults. |

It's not that video games have outgrown children, it's that the children who grew up since the 70s haven't grown out of video games.
Video games have evolved to become just another entertainment medium, no different than television shows or movies which also have to cater to both children and adults. |

No, they're still toys, just way more awesome. |

As for the argument that something is no longer a toy just because adults use it, well, bull. There are things called "adult toys", however, I'd rather not go that route. |

I don't think they've outgrown children. They've just expanded their market. Yes, I'd buy my kid a PS3, but I'd use it, too. |

I think while there are tons of games that are adult-oriented, they still make many that are for children as well. |

For some they are just toys, for some they are training for the war of all wars. Kids are getting desensitized like in countrys that are in a constatnt state of war and become soldiers at the smallage of 9.
I don't know... |
