Zero. The last time that I went to an ER was a long time ago...before kids...before marriage...when I was back in the Boston area visiting. I had an alcohol related accident and had to go to the ER to have my ankle/foot x-rayed.
Neither one of my kids has required a trip to the ER. Claire did break her arm when she was 8 months old but I rang the outpatient department of a private maternity hospital in Hong Kong and brought her in. None of the awful waiting of an ER. There is a public hospital near us that I would go to IF one of my kids was bleeding profusely and/or required immediate treatment. But I would prefer to take them to a private hospital if that's an option.
I LOVE health care in Hong Kong. It's some much better, easier and less expensive than in the US. |

I have been to an emergency room for myself once, and for my SO once. Ever. |

I have been to the emergency room at a nearby hospital maybe 4 times in my entire 47 years of life. |

This is not something I usually plan in advance. Hopefully zero, but a couple of years ago I spent five and a half months continuously, never leaving, can’t go home, stuck in a HOSPITAL! (Getting the picture?) Last two years the only reason I went anywhere near a doctor or a hospital was for a check up or when I dropped a large knife point down on my foot! (I was in stocking feet!) Ouch! |

The large knife incident could have been a emergency visit but in my manly stubbornness I waited until it got infected and went to my doctor under insurance. (CIR smart!) And avoided the entire “emergency”. Until I saw the creep of the dark mark of gangrene inching up my calf! (I wish I could put music to this somp’n like a movie soundtrack to a horror movie)
Really no big deal, a tetanus shot and some antibiotics.

I haven't been a patient at an A&E department since I was unwell and was referred to hospital via A&E when I was 15, so I checked "never". I was often sent to visit A&E at the hospital where I worked, to ask for certain supplies that they kept in stock down there. I'm sure I'll get to spend some time on placement (as a medical student) in A&E too - I'm sure it will be very interesting, but I don't think it will be the type of environment in which I would thrive. |
