Central.
When I bought my house, one of my only requirements was that it have central air. |

Works the best? That would depend on the particular air conditioner and the way the area to be cooled is arranged.
I greatly prefer central air; it's usually quieter and cools a larger area more thoroughly. I really dislike window air conditioners. |

I don't know, but I am saying central. Less electric, more efficient, less noisy. Much less noisy and you get to see out of the window. I haven't had much air conditioning in my life. Mom had a window unit in the kitchen, but I couldn't have any of it And I didn't have my own air conditioner till I bought my house. I had a window unit in the living room, and I bought a small one for the bedroom. I had that for several years when I had to get a new furnace, with all the duct work added in so I went ahead and had the central air put in with it. OMG what a difference. I doubt I could ever go back to a window unit. |

I don't use one. I wouldn't use one even if we had a lot more hot days than we now have. If I really couldn't stand it, I'd use a fan. I don't like having the windows closed. |

Central air |

I don't know as I don't use an air conditioner. Best, to me, would be the most energy-efficient, and I have no idea what that would be. |

A Central one. |

I don't know which is best but I like central myself - it's less noisy, cools the entire house and then again - some models are effecient and others are not, so... |

central air by far, i can't even imagine living here in florida with out central air. if i still lived up north in NYC or NJ, i could easily get by with window AC in an apartment or specific windows in a house but not here! |

I use fans throughout my home to try and keep it cool |

A split unit, one that has the fan and then the condensor, bolted to he wall outside, mega effficient , but dam it burns the old electricity |
paulyw | | (reply to gambler) posted 30-Jun-2008 9:36am |
If you are talking about those split units, that are old. Someone I knew had an old International Harvester window air conditioner that was a spit unit, which was split in the middle and you can almost close the window to reduce noise. You are right about them using a lot of electricity. |

I have only ever used a hand-held fan. I very rarely use or go to a place where air conditioning is used. |
moviesnob | | posted 30-Jun-2008 12:12pm |
I'd say central air - in my experience this has worked best. |
cerealkiller | | posted 30-Jun-2008 2:18pm |
Depends. A window/room AC puts out alot more cold air than a central system but they wouldn't be economically effective for a house. Central systems don't put out enough air. Like my house - the first rooms closest to the furnace get most of the air and the upstairs gets hardly any. The master bedroom you can't even feel any air coming out. |

Hi Pauly,
No, a split unit is bolted to the wall and runs a pipe outside to the condensor, which is bolted by brackets on the wall outside....... a window unit is basically the same but the fan coil & condensor are all in one, the disadvantage with this is (esp in Jamaica) is that most people here do not "actually" put them through a window (bad security) so they have a big 3ft x 3ft hole in the concrete wall!!
Window unit
Split unit
< the bottom piece is bolted outside |
paulyw | | (reply to gambler) posted 2-Jul-2008 12:19am |
OH OK! I seen those. Those are those Mr. Slim units made by Mittubushi. But have you ever seen those old International Harvester air conditioners? The unit I seen was like back from the 60s. and it was not as noisy but VERY HEAVY! And do you know what I am talking about with the split part in the middle of the air conditioner or are you confused? |
Matty |
Having had both, I can say they are about the same, provided there are enough window conditioners |
gambler | | (reply to paulyw) posted 2-Jul-2008 5:59pm |
No, No I understand perfectly......... Living in Jamaica , this is what most places use (split & window) as central Air would bankrupt you with the electricty bill.
Even my house, I have A/C in the 3 bedrooms (split units) ONLY, couldn't afford to AC the whole house! |
