Is internet trolling really all that bad?

There were a couple of surveys done about what SC should do with trolls in 2006, but I don't know how to link them here.

An Internet troll, or simply troll in Internet slang, is someone who posts controversial and usually irrelevant or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the intention of baiting other users into an emotional response or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion. I believe the most notorious troll at SC was Richard, and if memory serves, Bill actually endeavored to delete his accounts.

KILL THEM. KILL THEM ALL.

I think we're talking about some different kinds of trolls.

I would think that in an open forum getting trolled is inevitable and expected. There are also many degrees of trolliness, I mean short irrelevant one liners interjected into conversation can be entertaining or amusing what I do not like is; mean and hateful comments relevant or not who’s sole purpose to reek havoc. I could be accused of trolling at times, but it is only my clumsy attempt to be charming or funny. Trolls know who they are (I mean real trolls) I think in some way they feel empowered buy the reaction they extract.

I answered...

*check* No, I sometimes enjoy reading the arguments

It is the truth, as long as I am not the brunt of the attack! I mean really! Who doesn’t like to watch a good mud fight?

The only way to get de-trolled is to close the forum………I don’t think so! It is possible to de-fang a troll though; once identified, just freeze him out, when he (or she) fails to bait anyone in a reaction and is generally ignored, will go away to a different site.

Good survey!

Annoying sometimes, especially if they target particular people. If there's no targeting going on, only off-topic controversial comments, then I find it amusing.

Trolls and trolling are annoying (slightly). Last time I've trolled was like when I was 18 / 19 (?). Not counting bow tie x that is.

Trolling isn't anything more than the high tech version of crank phone calls. Nothing more, nothing less. Or as I always used to say, "we musten ridden das trollen."

Wow, I'm kinda surprised at that. She never really bothered me. I had one or two minor skirmishes with her, but they were over pretty quickly. Things must have changed considerably since I was here last.

I don't believe the most notorious troll was Richard. I don't think a person should have been singled out in the explanation of this survey, as it seems the only reason you made it was to put that person in the "public" SC eye.

Think what you like, but I can assure the last time I was here, simply mentioning the name Richard caused a reaction. In fact, there was even a witch hunt in both Forum and Chat trying to discern which users were really aliases for Richard. However, since you don't believe me, ask Bill how Richard was viewed around that time or in years prior.

Further, I have no argument with Richard whatsoever. After a particularly nasty forum debate, Richard actually wrote to me at my email address apologizing. We then had a brief, but reasonable discourse via email for a couple months after that. If you go back to some of the posts around early 2006, you'll discover that I was one of the lone proponents of his membership.

Evidently however, you never checked or asked others that have been here for a while about events past. You simply rattled off your opinion accusing me of wanting to "out" Richard as the motivation for my survey. I don't appreciate your unsubstantiated accusations. Perhaps next time, you'll ask someone's intent before lambasting someone's motives in the "public eye."

I've heard enough about the past here at SC to stick with my previous opinion. And my opinion as to why you have Richard mentioned in the survey is just that - my opinion. I find it pretty funny that you're getting on me about not knowing the past of SC, when I've been around 4 yrs, and your user page shows you at 3.

Remember, they're just words on an Internet forum from someone who's never met you and doesn't know you. No need to take it so personally!

Personally may be considered a relative term. But stating what my motives are is an ad-hominum opinion. The point still remains that you leveled an accusation without even asking me, so I cried foul.

As far as your longevity versus mine...yay, you're the winner. However, the benefit of that experience did not give any insight as to how I view Richard or how Richard may view me, did it? Again, I would suggest that before you say something about someone that could paint that person in a negative light, you should pay him/her the courtesy of talking to him/her first. If you don't agree, then what's the whole point of your initially stated opinion?

It occurred to me that I should explain some of my past actions related to this issue.

In some cases (e.g. Kate) multiple accounts were used and qualification and survey ratings were double (even triple) rated by the same person. I had clear evidence that Kate was single-handedly blocking surveys in qual by using multiple accounts. It got so bad, before I realized what she was doing that I changed how qual works. Most of those changes still exist today, actually. For example, qualifiers can't see other's votes. It was quite remarkable how much she was able to affect qual. It caused a fair bit of grief. I banned her, but she kept coming back with new identities/accounts. I missed some, I think. But, eventually, I thought I'd change tactics and let her back as herself, as long as she just used one account. This seemed to work for a couple months, but then I caught her using more than one account again. It was really kind of unbelievable that she would do that, pathological. So, I banned her again. I think at this point, I have better tools in place to catch her. I delete a new Kate account on average about once a week, even within the last week and this has continued for months.

Given the wording of your survey, perhaps Kate isn't quite a troll, and I'd have to agree. She actually seemed to want to be friendly with people here. But, with the other hand, she was doing underhanded manipulations of the system.

The other big one was Richard47. He's had a number of accounts/identities here. Really, I have to give him some credit because with a few of them he really seemed to pull off the new identity well with very consistent patterns. I guess he has some background in acting, so perhaps it was a kind of exercise. And, really, it doesn't even seem so bad. But, another aspect of Richard was the way he would show a keen interest in other member's lives, troubles, etc. From what I could tell, he managed to get a lot of people to open up to him. He has a background and interest in psychology as well. Again, this isn't such a bad thing by itself. But, combined with the false identities it just seemed disturbing. Some surveys have a way of getting people to open up, exposing themselves. People in that state are a bit vulnerable and Richard seemed to be exploiting that but with a falseness that seemed potentially harmful. I'll admit this is still somewhat weak for an argument, but that was my state of mind anyway. After years of accounts and deletions, I gave Richard a similar chance to come back as himself. He took it and has been back, though hasn't been around so much recently. And, as far as I know, hasn't used other accounts since.

There have been some other briefer accounts by others that I banned for just being really annoying... nothing recent, though, so it's hard to give details. But, imagine someone coming to the site and then just making a series of extremely offensive replies (i.e. "I want to rape you in the anus, chicken") to many of the regular members. That's sort of classic trolling, I guess.

I think there are other kinds of trolls which we tolerate. Frostbrand has been a troll for sure at times. I and others will sometimes make sarcastic remarks and no take surveys seriously. This is a kind of trolling. There are many shades of gray. Actually, before you made this survey I had just been thinking about what makes someone a troll and I was thinking of trying to make a survey about it. Though, it's always hard to word something like that.

Well, Bill, I must thank you for your commentary, and I must say that I never considered trolling from a site administrator’s perspective. Given your perspective, I admit that many of my past comments were troll-like as well.

I think you’ll find that won’t be the case with me in the future, though. My career change has had many cathartic effects on me. For sure, I am still opinionated, and I am still willing to do some bitter business if it’s required of me. But, I am less excitable and less prone to conflict. At any rate, I am glad you still welcome me at your site.

Cheers,

Matthew

I still work for the Federal government; I am not giving up my pension for anything. But I now work for an entitlement program (previously I was in the agri/bio anti terrorist program under Homeland Security; it was a joint effort with the SS, the company, D Agriculture, the FBI, ATF, HHS, and some others). I am now a fraud investigator/claims examiner for the Office of Workers Compensation Programs under the Department of Labor. Essentially, I check into whether or not people are legitimately injured and thereby, justly receiving wage-loss compensation, or lazy loafers defrauding the American people. I like this job a lot more.
